PedEgg sweeps us off our feet

What it is: PedEgg; $10; available at www.pedegg.com or at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Bed Bath & Beyond and other stores.

As Seen on TV

What it claims to do: The manufacturer of the PedEgg, Telebrands, calls it the “ultimate foot file” which gently removes calluses and dry skin by using more than 135 stainless steel micro files. The files are attached to one side of a “comfortable, ergonomically designed” plastic egg, which also collects all of the skin shavings in a “convenient storage compartment.

My experience: I live in the city so I’m on my feet a lot, walking at least 10-15 miles a week and sometimes more. By the time summer rolls around, I need to invest in a bit of maintenance to get my little piggies ready for market (not to mention those strappy sandals). But how to go about it?

As much as I enjoy pedicures, they’re a little pricey for my pocketbook and spending an hour in the bathroom with an emery board is about as thrilling as sanding a piece of cement. After a long hard winter, in fact, that’s essentially what it is. The PedEgg – prudently priced at just $10 – seemed a great solution. I could pamper myself and still toe the budgetary line.

After picking one up, I spent 10 minutes reading through the instructions AND warnings before cracking it open and diabetics and/or those with poor circulation will definitely want to follow suit. Why? Because the PedEgg is basically a cheese grater for your foot. And baby, that sucker works.

I was able to shave a ton of rough winter skin from my heels and the balls of my feet within minutes. The PedEgg worked so well, in fact, that I decided to use it two nights in a row and wound up hot-footing it around town on burning pink heels for the next four days. Be warned: Overzealousness with this gadget is not a good idea. In other words, step lightly.

As for the PedEgg’s much-touted ability to collect all the skin shavings in its hollow body thus allowing you to use it “anywhere” (At work? On the bus? On a date? Let’s hope not), I’d take that with a grain of salt. If you can manage to keep the metal-side face up, the PedEgg does pretty well at keeping everything contained. But when you turn it upside down (which is something you’ll need to do to sand down those stubborn calluses), you will notice a little “foot dandruff” on the floor.

What the expert says: Dr. Howard Dinowitz, a Brooklyn, N.Y., podiatrist, says the first step in taking care of your feet is to visit the foot doctor to make sure you don’t have any complications you’re not aware of.  Once you’re cleared, though, “callus removal is a wonderful thing,” he says. Simple, over-the-counter remedies like the PedEgg can reduce some of the foot’s roughness and dryness in a noninvasive way, he says, but don’t overdo it.

“Overzealous usage of any type of product that causes friction can definitely lead to problems with the skin,” he says. That’s particularly true for “someone who might be a diabetic and has a condition known as neuropathy” (i.e., the lack of peripheral sensation or feeling of the feet). Used in moderation, though, he says the PedEgg is “probably a great thing, especially if you use it in conjunction with a nice hydrating cream.”

Bottom line: I have to just say it: The PedEgg swept me off my feet. Sure, the light dusting of “foot powder” that seeps out of its plastic shell is a bit annoying, especially after all the manufacturer’s no-fuss, no-muss promises. But the PedEgg’s metal filing surface does a great job of shaving off calluses quickly and painlessly (much better than any pedicurist I’ve ever been to). And it really does have a simple, sleek design. Sort of like your feet once you get them all gussied up.

I also had the terrible "winter feet" and can't afford to get pedicures as often as I would like so I decided to fork over the money to give the PedEgg a try. It works great, just make sure you don't get carried away and use it too rough. The only thing that would be better is if the stores would also have the deal that is advertised on TV - buy one and get one free and get the foot lotion as a bonus. But any foot cream would work I suppose. Definately worth the money. I would recommend it to everyone
I bought one for myself a couple of weeks ago and I LOVE it!!!  It works so much better than those razor things that nail salons use and is much safer as well.  I've been recommending them to all my friends that haven't already gotten one.
I bought this a few months ago and I love it, it works great and its very easy to use.  The little stuff that falls out is a pain but is well worth it for the outcome. You can buy replacment blades (if that's what they call them) too, so you don't have to purchase a whole new egg.  Thanks PedEgg.
Bought this on a telephone call after watching the TV ad. DON"T DO IT! The product works great and is a bargain, I agree with the review, but buying via telephone subjects you to a littany of annoying "me too" promotions that took over 20 minutes. Will never buy from a TV ad again.
I agree!! I love my egg!! I'ts easy to use, convienent, and it really works!! Great for Summmer sandal season....
I'm married to a cave man that won't submit to a "girly" pedicure.  He will use the ped egg however.  Ahhh, relief from his rough, caloused feet...its a great tool.
I love my  PedEgg!
Yes! I bought this a few days ago myself, and I love it! I live in Wyoming, and between the nine months of cold weather and extremely dry air, my heels were in terrible shape. With just three uses of the PedEgg, they are as smooth as silk.

This is a great product, and one that actually works as it's supposed to.
I agree with you - but the "platinum" version is even better than the original and faster. Some of the best money spent to get your tootsies ready for the sandal season!
I agree! 50 year old male w/ dry and cracked skin on the heels.  One session and a little lotion...presto!  Feels like a baby's butt.  My daughter bought it for herself and I picked it up and gave it a try.  It really does work.  Use the handy sander afterward for the final smoothing.
I bought one of these - and after noticing the dry skin powder coming out, decided that the bathroom was the best place to use this thing. But! I must say it works wonderfully - much better than an pumice stone. And the article is right - you don't want to go too crazy and scrape off too much - overall, I think it's worth the 10.00!
I, too, have the PedEgg and love it!  Use it lightly every few days and follow up with a nice lotion... summer sandals couldn't look nicer!
For anyone that cooks (and I apologize in advance for making food references here as it's gross), this is a a microplaner for parmesan and lemon zest with a container attached to capture foot shavings.  If you're done gagging, I'll continue!  The author is right.  It totally works.  After being disapointed at it's simplicity and cheap feel after opening the package (somehow I got it in my head that it was going to be battery powered - it's not), I gave it a try anyway.  It's easy to use and it gets at those calluses while being comfortable to hold.  Worth a try, but be ready to vacuum up the powdered foot on the floor. Ick.
Co-incidentally, I bought a PedEgg yesterday and was equally impressed, not to mention flabergasted at the amount of "foot dandruff" (nice euphemism) produced. Living in florida, sandals are year-round footwear. At home I prefer bare feet and the tile in the house really promotes callus build up.
I am naturally sceptical of miraculous claims, but figured for ten bucks I had little to lose.
All I can say is GET ONE!
OK, good, I wanted to buy one, but you know about tv stuff, you just never know, I am glad I checked out the article. I too love pretty feet, but those pedicures can really cost a lot :( I am checkin out more of your articles right now.
The pedegg is the greatest thing -- I love it!!!!!  I turned about 10 girlfriends onto it.  It is one of our favorite things.  Oprah should know about this thing!!! This thing should be in everyone's bathroom.
my wife and sister in law has it and they love it. i've yet to use it but will soon. The comment about the "dust" is accurate. The wife noticed there is some that comes out.
I tend to get a pretty good callus buildup on my heels.  My girlfriend spotted thsi and picked one up.  These things are AMAZING.  works in minutes with no fuss and very little mess.  Definitely worth the cash.
it does work great, just go easy, bought mine at full of life catalog,
I purchased the PedEgg after severely cutting my heal with another type of callous remover.  It worked so well that I bought my sister one and she loves it too.  This is a great product and I would recommend it to everyone.
I bought my PedEgg and I absolutely love it!  I can put up with all the shavings on the floor.  Hands down - the best TV infomercial purchase I have ever made.
It is fabulous.. I have tried it all and this little PedEgg is just the quickest and best thing I have ever used.  My feet are smoother 3 days after then getting a pedicure.  What a differnce this has made.  Diffinately worth the $9.50 (Sally's Beauty Supply).
i bought one not too long ago and IT REALLY WORKS!!!! My husband also used it. Evreyone should get one.
This product sounds helpful.  What astounds me is how so many people can get through an entire winter without soaking their feet regularly while taking a bath, then rubbing them with granules - sugar will do fine.  This would eliminate so much springtime hassle and make it comfortable for you and your feet all year long, not to mention the comfort of smooth feet.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT.  Nothing more to say!!!!
I have used this since before Christmas  and I LOVE it. I bougnt my niece one too she loves it too,  but i don't understand the gripe of the dander falling . Just don't tip it over  not hard i never do it with the shaver faceing downword. Use as directed no problem
Best thing since sliced bread.  No lie.
Bought it a week ago at Walmart for $10 and it delivers as promised.
Best invention since sliced Bread!!  Love my PedEgg, but wish they sell the emery board to smooth your feet even more seperatly. 2 is not enough
Thanks PedEgg!!!!
You can avoid the granules by using this in the bath/shower???
Wish I had bought it 2 "professional" pedicures ago.  It is the answer!
A few weeks ago, I bought a Ped-Egg at Bed, Bath and Beyond after seeing it on TV.  I gave it to my mother and she loves it!  Now, I have to return to the store and pick one up for myself...I like th eother writer's idea about giving it to friends...I am in Hilton Head, SC fo rthe summer and it is a place where your feet take a lot of wear and tear so it willcome in handy and they provide a few extra pads in the pack.
Got mine last week and after one use my tootsies were smooth as can be. Now I use it lightly every couple of days for maintenance.  As far as the "foot dandruff" goes, I just sit on the edge of the tub with my foot across one knee and the bathroom trash can underneath.  Problem solved!
My sister told me about the Ped-Egg and it really works! We've both suffered with dry and cracked heels for years and are thrilled with the results of the Ped-Egg.  FYI-I use it over the bathroom trash can to catch the extra fine powder that falls out while using it.
okay so I scanned all the responses so far, and I agree with them all.  I bought mine at Wal-Mart and for 9.99 it is a wonderful tool.  Why did it take so long for someone to invent this?  It is so safe compared to other items like razoring heel (yikes) or using a blade (too dangerous).  And even safer that using a pumice stone in the shower where you could fall over.  I do agree that it creates a mess of powdered skin-- so do it in the tub or put your foot up on the toilet edge and go to town.  It is the first product "AS ADVERTISED" that I truly love.
Use it on dry skin, not so much on wet.  Works like a charm, then use the emery surface to finish the job.  Great product!
I have the worst feet and pedicures are expensive.  This is great.  So a little powdered skin on the floor is not to bad compared how bad my feet were.  My feet now 1000 times better.  I do not have to hide my feet at the pool.  Great invention.
I was at work when i started reading about this pedegg and I remember my husband telling me at Walgreens "don't buy it, it doesn't work" well I just got one for me and I couldn't wait to get home so I did my own pedicure at work and "It works fantastic"
A real deal,....10$ at Walgreens, works great.......
I have read all the reviews so far and I have to say that they've given me a good laugh and now I have a curiosity to try this thing out!  Fortunately my feet are not that bad, but it surely would help erase those tough spots from working shoes!!!  I have a client who recently bought one and she swears by it!  We're talking about someone who is very good w/ her money, and refuses to buy anything "stupid" or "not worth it".  That means a lot coming from her mouth!!!!  I'll have to run out and buy one, but the problem is that I'll want to buy one for everyone of my friends, lol!
Funny, Microplane (yes, the high-end grater company) has made these for a few years at twice the price.  I bought them for the entire family as stocking stuffers. Microplane carries an amazing orange blossom foot cream which is great after a session with your new foot "grater."  Sit on the edge of the tub and wash away all those flakes!
Great product.  I tried this after seeing it on tv and I loved it.  I have also given one to my wife and she says it's great too!  As for the foot dandruff, I simply spread out a newspaper below my feet and it catches all the fallout.
I LOVE MINE!!! Even with soaking and using other products, I still end up with thick calluses on my heels.  Besides being unsightly, the calluses sometimes cracked, too.  This product is fantastic.-- my heels are so smooth that I now own several pairs of sandals and even began buying pantyhose again.
Love it also. It worked well and I held it face-up with my food facing down and it didn't "leak". I was amazed how much "dandruff" was in the storage because my feet weren't really too bad...I had been wanting a pedicure and was glad I bought this instead.
I've had mine for a while, and really enjoy the results!!  I immediately bought a package of replacement heads and feel like I am ready for the summer!  Just a few days ago, my son borrowed it, and I haven't seen it since...Guess I need to get myself another one!!!  LOL!
When I bought mine, I figured I was probably wasting $10, but I thought: "what the heck, it might work".  After just one use, the bottom of my feet were smooth as silk!  I had absolutely no problem with the shavings leaking out when turned upside down to finish with the sanding paper; simply empty the shavings first.  This is a product that really delivers what it says it will, and is a real bargain at $10.
Hedged on buying the PedEgg for quite awhile, musta been because I didn't want to part with 10 bucks.  Finally bought one last week and I'm absolutely thrilled with it.  My heels haven't felt this smooth in years.  Only drawback is now I can't scratch my legs with my heels when they itch. Get it!!!
i also have a pedegg and I love it> like most folks these days i cant afford the biweekly visit to my local nail salon.  So this is a great solution!  I never thought of it as a microplane but now that i think of it it really is!  Use the pedegg and then put neutrogena foot lotion on your feet put socks on for over night or just slide into your fav shoes. Great invention!
The PedEgg sounds great but why pay $10??  I got a hand held one with and smoothing file on the opposite side for like $3 at a grocery store.  I use it in the shower just before I get out.  It actually works better when your feet have soaked a bit.
As I'm sitting here on vacay at my mother-in-laws ( bored out of my mind ), I'm reading all of your positive comments and have decided to run out to Wal-Mart to purchase it.  Thanks for the comments, they really help other consumers, such as myself, decide whether to purchase such products.
