PedEgg sweeps us off our feet

What it is: PedEgg; $10; available at www.pedegg.com or at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Bed Bath & Beyond and other stores.

As Seen on TV

What it claims to do: The manufacturer of the PedEgg, Telebrands, calls it the “ultimate foot file” which gently removes calluses and dry skin by using more than 135 stainless steel micro files. The files are attached to one side of a “comfortable, ergonomically designed” plastic egg, which also collects all of the skin shavings in a “convenient storage compartment.

My experience: I live in the city so I’m on my feet a lot, walking at least 10-15 miles a week and sometimes more. By the time summer rolls around, I need to invest in a bit of maintenance to get my little piggies ready for market (not to mention those strappy sandals). But how to go about it?

As much as I enjoy pedicures, they’re a little pricey for my pocketbook and spending an hour in the bathroom with an emery board is about as thrilling as sanding a piece of cement. After a long hard winter, in fact, that’s essentially what it is. The PedEgg – prudently priced at just $10 – seemed a great solution. I could pamper myself and still toe the budgetary line.

After picking one up, I spent 10 minutes reading through the instructions AND warnings before cracking it open and diabetics and/or those with poor circulation will definitely want to follow suit. Why? Because the PedEgg is basically a cheese grater for your foot. And baby, that sucker works.

I was able to shave a ton of rough winter skin from my heels and the balls of my feet within minutes. The PedEgg worked so well, in fact, that I decided to use it two nights in a row and wound up hot-footing it around town on burning pink heels for the next four days. Be warned: Overzealousness with this gadget is not a good idea. In other words, step lightly.

As for the PedEgg’s much-touted ability to collect all the skin shavings in its hollow body thus allowing you to use it “anywhere” (At work? On the bus? On a date? Let’s hope not), I’d take that with a grain of salt. If you can manage to keep the metal-side face up, the PedEgg does pretty well at keeping everything contained. But when you turn it upside down (which is something you’ll need to do to sand down those stubborn calluses), you will notice a little “foot dandruff” on the floor.

What the expert says: Dr. Howard Dinowitz, a Brooklyn, N.Y., podiatrist, says the first step in taking care of your feet is to visit the foot doctor to make sure you don’t have any complications you’re not aware of.  Once you’re cleared, though, “callus removal is a wonderful thing,” he says. Simple, over-the-counter remedies like the PedEgg can reduce some of the foot’s roughness and dryness in a noninvasive way, he says, but don’t overdo it.

“Overzealous usage of any type of product that causes friction can definitely lead to problems with the skin,” he says. That’s particularly true for “someone who might be a diabetic and has a condition known as neuropathy” (i.e., the lack of peripheral sensation or feeling of the feet). Used in moderation, though, he says the PedEgg is “probably a great thing, especially if you use it in conjunction with a nice hydrating cream.”

Bottom line: I have to just say it: The PedEgg swept me off my feet. Sure, the light dusting of “foot powder” that seeps out of its plastic shell is a bit annoying, especially after all the manufacturer’s no-fuss, no-muss promises. But the PedEgg’s metal filing surface does a great job of shaving off calluses quickly and painlessly (much better than any pedicurist I’ve ever been to). And it really does have a simple, sleek design. Sort of like your feet once you get them all gussied up.

I have suffered with horribly dry, cracked heals and callused big toes for years.  I used to use a metal file nearly every night and spend lots of money on pedicures, but nothing got my feet as smooth as the ped-egg.  The ped-egg is easy to use and within minutes of the first use, my feet were soft and pretty.  I also used the emery board stick on to quickly remove hard cuticles on my fingers.  It worked much better than a cuticle scissors!  It is definitely worth the $10!
yes, this pedegg is a wonderful tool. My son used to say my feet had turtle shells on the bottom. Now thnaks to this little device, I have soft heels. To avoid "foot dandruff, I place a towel down on the floor underneath while using. I use it after my shower while the skin is damp and soft. This cuts down on the foot dandruff too. I love it.
This product is a Microplane rip off.  These TV products specialize in stealing other companies ideas.  Buy quality Microplane Footfile at www.microplane.com.
I love my PedEgg! I bought mine from Wal-mart 2 weeks ago, and it works just as it says it does! I have suffered from terrible calluses on my feet for years, and those pumice stones never worked for me as well. Well worth the $10!
This is a rip off of the Microplane Footfile.  These TV companys specialize in stealing other companies ideas.  Buy the real thing at www.microplane.com
I have always had "rough" feet, and being diabetic I had to avoid the traditional pedicure parlors.  I bought a foot razor from Revlon (I thought I could do better for myself) and it caused extreme damage despite the claims from the company.  Here 8 months later, I decide to try the PedEgg as my aunt recommended.  THIS IS THE BEST SOLUTION HANDS DOWN.  I was able to remove the rough skin without damaging my feet!  My feet haven't been this soft since I was a baby!  I followed up with a foot soak and some foot lotion and now I can wear flipflops and sandals with no shame!
I bought the pedegg when it first came out and told all my friends about it. I love it use it all the time. They bought one as well and love theres.
Bad item, potentially dangerous, use a cream with hydrea. Most podiatrist offices sell it OTC, with no prescription needed. Dr. Bob
The Egg works as advertised. I love it. It's better tnan any other product I've ever tried. I highly recommend it.
I LOVE MY PedEgg!!  I did fall to the internet purchase of my "As Seen on TV" product and bought the "Two for $10" special.  Well, I ended up paying almost $30 for two and lotion with shipping and handling charges (it wasn't in the stores yet) but I LOVE it.  Definately worth the money!  I have recommended the PedEgg to all of my friends!  It takes about 10 to 15 minutes a week (once a week) and I found the combo of the PedEgg, my new foot spa, and a good foot lotion the best ever!
My mom bought me and my sister a Ped-Egg and it is the best thing ever.  I have tried everything including a Dremmel tool and this beats them all!!! I highly recommend it!!
I bought one recently as well. I love it and my kids who play soccer and have calloused feet all the time love it as well!!! It works very well!!
I have contemplated many times in ordering the PedEgg, but was turned off with all the questions asked by the representative when placing a telephone order.  So, I never ordered one.  After reading all the positive comments about the PedEgg and learning that I can purchase it at a local store, I am going shopping right now.  See ya!
Just got my Ped Egg and LOVE IT!!  I have had dry cracked heels forever and this is the first gadget that has actually done a fantastic job and so easy.  I don't mind the "dust".  Just used it once so far and my feet have never looked or felt better.  I would definitely say if you don't have one GET ONE !!!
I love my PedEgg!!!!!!!  I returned to Walgreens after I bought it & told all the sales people how amazing it was & they should tell everyone to buy one!  I have spent years razoring my calluses & always going to deep - OUCH!  This thing is easier & safer!  I'm in total agreement - "BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!"
Love your articles!  Love the Ped-Egg too! And like you I was Overzealous in using the first time.  For all who have the same problem there is a solution in the bandaid section of the store with an "Abrasion Cover" clear, breathable and waterproof they work like a charm!
DON'T BUY IT!!!
I bought one, and I don't feel that it does anything.  Maybe my feet aren't bad enough to see the results, but I think using a file would do just as well.  I thought it was a waste of money, I even considered taking it back.
Maybe I'm using it wrong, but it does NOT work for me. I feel like it was a waste of money. :(
it is ok, but i think i could have bought a hand-held cheese grater cheaper & done the same thing. i guess i had it in my head that it was going to be battery operated too.
My EX-husband once asked me how I managed to get the 'heels of an old Nigerian woman that had never owned a pair of shoes'?  As vivid as that was, being a little white woman and all- it's not far from the truth.

Needless to say, I'll be going to pick one up TODAY!! And, he is my 'EX' husband for a reason!
I've had my PedEgg for a few months and just love it!! Not only are professional pedicures oo expensive, I am so ticklish that they really not an option. For the first time in a long time, my feet are really pretty. However, I, too, wonder about the use it "anywhere" claim. The only negative is that it is very easy to get carried away and too much of this good thing can be painful the next day. This is one of the few products advertised on TV that I would recommend without reservation to nearly anyone.
Guess I wasn't using ENOUGH pressure cuz the PedEgg did NOTHING for me. I'm a dental hygienist with a light touch and I was very cautious after all the warnings not to be too aggressive. Sadly, I ended up chucking the gadget into the trash can:(
I suffer from extraordinarily rough heels/side of foot skin, so I'm used to using a foot-file on an almost daily basis - especially during stockings seasons (fall, winter, early spring) to avoid ripping them each time I wear them. I bought the PedEgg a few months ago and liked it - it worked faster than the file on the roughest patches, but as others have mentioned, you do have to be careful about using it too enthusiastically. One other word of caution: on its own (even with the emery board section) it does not smoothe the feet enough to be able to easily wear stockings and not run them, at least for me. So I have to use the smoother/finer side of my old foot file to finish off my feet. And then, of course, use a good moisturizer....
For years my heels would literally crack and peel off in sheets. I'm 53 and have always had ugly, embarrassing feet. I picked one up at the Sear's register (9.99) and it is the best purchase of my entire life!!!!  I have Diabetes, and I did file off too much the first time and had to use antibiotic ointment over my entire foot, but I didn't pay any attention to the directions, until the next time I used it.  Now I know just how long to use it and I'm showing my feet off to everybody!
I bought my PedEgg at Sally's for 9.99 and I LOVE IT!  I get a pedicure every 3 weeks and it keeps my feet looking nice in between.  I loved it so much I bought several and gave to family and friends.  My male friend loves it too even though I have never been able to talk him into a pedicure.

I bought my PedEgg (went with the professional one) off the ad, and other than the Food Saver way back when, this is the ONLY informercial-type product that I've purchased that actually works as advertised!  This thing ROCKS!!  No more rough, dry feet - yeah, there might be a little "foot dandruff" to deal with, but I'd rather use the vacuum or a broom when I use my PedEgg than have cracked feet.  I love it, and am glad I bought more than one so I can share!
I have not bought one of these because it really looks like a cheese grater, which is a disturbing thought. Did anybody have a bad experience?  Seems like it could cut you up.
WONDERFUL TOOL!!! I have never tried any a thing that works as well as the PedEgg.
As the voice of discension, I'd rather save up for a pedicure than use PedEgg. I was so excited because it looked like a great product; if I had known what is was like before I bought it, I would've saved my $10. My pumice stone/emery file work just as well.
I so agree with all of you - I think it's a terrific tool, but do be careful - I got a little overzealous and nicked my toe a bit - a few days with neosporan and all is well, but just take it easy. Otherwise I love it - use a nice heavy duty foot cream afterwards and your feet will feel super!
I couldn't help it!  I was at Fry's electronics last night and saw on, after I read these reviews, and I LOVE IT!
I have been using it a couple of months now and I like it as well.  I also use it on my elbows, but you need to be very gentle in this area.  I also follow with lotion, and lotion my feet and elbows every night.
Sorry, but I've been a big fan of Microplane's foot care products for a couple years now.  I did purchase an Egg to try, since they are cheaper than the Microplane foot files.  But after using the Microplane, the PedEgg just doesn't compare at all.  A cheapo version of the real thing. It's like eating filet mignon v. hamburger. I took my PedEgg back to the store for a refund and promptly re-ordered another Microplane.
Bought mine at Walgreen-$10. Used it and immediately knew I had found THE item I had been looking for for years. I have always had dry, cracked heels. My ex said he had "seen better looking feet on an ape!" Bought one of these and have since bought one for my daughter, both sisters, my mom, and my ex's new wife! You will wonder how you lived with out it.  SERIOUSLY--I LOVE THE PED-EGG. My daughter's boyfriend even uses it. Worth every penny--just lay down a towel if you're worried about the  "dust."  WHO CARES--your feet will be soft as a baby's bottom--i'm not kidding!
Beware: podiatrists are notorious rip-offs.  They are not medical doctors.  They have not been to medical school.  They'll sell you all sorts of expensive treatments and orthotics that you don't need or could get a better price.  If you really have a problem with your feet go to an M.D.!!!  I was ripped off twice before I learned my lesson.
I am a cosmetologist from Grand Cayman. I was a bit skeptical about the ad; but decide to try it anyway; Because of the amount of powder that came from the egg. Boy was I surprised; the PedEgg really works. I can't thank you enough. Two thumbs up.
bought it @ Wal-mart; Right, this does not work. I was not happy @ all or maybe i just got a faulty ped-egg but a stone when soaking your feet or granules or even a file works better, come on.
I bought mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond too.  Not that $10 was too much to spend, but I asked the girl behind the counter (since no one else was in line) if she had used one or heard anything about them.  She politely said, "No, but they're never any returns."  So, I brought it home and tried it on one foot first.  I waited two days before doing the other foot (just to satisfy the before & after junkie in me).  WOW! Now both of my feet are BEAUTIFUL!!  Go purchase a PedEgg!!!
I was also very skeptical when I bought my PedEgg.  My heels get such a thick callous to the point it cracks, and I figured nothing would get rid of it, but the PedEgg does everything it's hyped up to!  I absolutely love it and would highly recommend it, especially for the $10 I spent on it vs. the $50 I've spent on professional pedicures that only last a week.  I sit on the edge of my tub so if any "foot dandruff" falls out of the PedEgg, it falls into the tub and I just rinse the tub out.  DEFINITELY worth it.
I bought the ped egg at my rite aid a couple of months ago.I am so glad I spent the 9.99 it was really worth it.My feet were always rough even after using other products. Now they are nice and soft.Thank you so much for the ped egg.I wish you could come up with a ped egg with a long handle for people that can not bend their knees, after having both knees replaced  it is hard to use  by myself thank goodness for having grandkids that can do my feet for me
I have one and it really works for me.  My daughter went out and got one as well, and we are all happy with the results.  I use a newspaper when I use it to catch any extra shavings, which are very little. For the ten dollars, you can't beat it!
After watching Stella Riches on HSN a few times demonstrating the PedEgg I finally decided to purchase it. I absolutely LOVE IT and it is so easy to use and clean up. Now I can wear my sandals without embarrassment and I don't have to worry about when I can get my next pedicure appointment!
I really don't understand how some of you are saying that it does not work.... I had THE WORST heels imaginable and going to get pedicures did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for them and soaking them, scrubbing with stones, filing them DID NOT work.I bought the PedEgg one Sunday and after one use my heels look like I have NEVER walked on the ground without shoes or socks on. ITS GREAT!!!!!! I have told everyone about it.
My boyfriend has phoriasis all over but his feet get unusually thick skin from his condition...the Ped Egg was a god send. He actually can't believe how great it worked, especially when nothing else would on the thick hardened skin.
I also fell for the advertisement and lo and behold it is the best $10.00 i have spent in a while--
I agree with Betina from St. Louis; I bought a similar gadget at my local dollar store quite some time ago and it's still going strong.  Why pay $10 for something when you can get something just as good for $1?
My kids and I were so grossed out by the commercials that I didn't intend to ever buy a Pedegg.  However, after reading all the positive comments and seeing my feet in sandals after a long winter, I have reconsidered.  Thanks for all the comments and the helpful hints about the dreaded "foot dandruff"!
Had the same thought, "wasting my money" but I ended up doing my feet and my mothers.  Years of using emery scrubbing boars, and pumice could not do what the PedEgg did in under an hour.  My mom couldn't believe the results...and she has really bad feet.
The reason you would have dry heels in the first place is because you aren't getting enough 'essential fatty acids' in your diet, meaning the 'right' kind of fats.  If you got enough of those in your daily diet, plus use a good lotion daily, you wouldn't ever need one of these gadgets.
