Kinoki foot pads: Sucking away toxins or just your money?

Posted: Thursday, June 19, 2008 8:56 PM

By Paige West, director of interactive projects

What it is: Kinoki Detox Foot Pads, $19.99, www.buykinoki.com

What it claims to do: The foot pads collect “harmful toxins” from your body while you sleep, says the manufacturer, by “cleansing and detoxifying your skin’s outer layers,” boosting your energy level and improving your health and wellness.

My experience: I was surfing the Web on a rainy Seattle night with the TV on in the background when whatever late-night show I’d been watching ended and suddenly, images of a woman in a kimono filled the screen as a voice-over told me about an ancient Japanese secret that would give me better health and well-being. The claims were so fantastic that it took me a while to decide whether I was watching a satirical sketch or an ad for a real product.

The item in question? The Kinoki Detox Foot Pad – and it’s real, all right.

Every night for two weeks, you attach a small, white pad to the bottom of your foot right before going to bed. While you sleep, the pad removes “heavy metals, metabolic waste, toxins, chemicals and more!” A fancy graphic on the Kinoki infomercial explained that the pad draws toxins down your legs and out through the soles of your feet like a biological magnet. There’s even “proof” that it’s working: After wearing it overnight, the pad is black and puffy, full of nasty crud that used to be floating around in your body. As a result, you will feel better and have more energy! At least, that's what the lady in the kimono seemed to be promising.

Putting it on, I discovered, is a little like building your own foot-sized Band-Aid. I followed the instructions by placing the pad in the middle of an accompanying piece of adhesive, pressed it on to the sole of my foot and went to bed.

The next morning, my ticklish feet gamely endured my peeling the pad off when, to my surprise – and utter disgust – I found it had turned completely black. Worse yet, it smelled like a vile combination of sweat and the acrid smoke of a campfire. But that day at work I was oddly perky.  Maybe there was something to this detoxification system.

Alas, no.  The directions say that continued use is supposed to result in the pads becoming less and less black over time due to the gradual elimination of toxins from my body, but mine continued to be dark and smelly every morning.  The only pattern I saw was related to how long I’d slept – longer equaled blacker (though, luckily, not smellier).

And my higher energy level? That vanished, and I found myself in an ugly funk a few days into my experiment, but I blame that more on the gray Seattle weather than Kinoki.

Growing increasingly suspicious, I decided at the end of the two weeks to test a theory.  I held one of the foot pads over a kettle of boiling water, and within about 10 seconds, that familiar blackness and smoky odor became obvious.

What the expert says: Dr. Devra Davis, director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh and an expert on toxins, did a similar experiment:  She left the foot pads out overnight without their plastic packaging and saw the same effects.  She says the pads contain little more than green tea and vinegar.

“It doesn’t make sense that these ingredients would produce that effect,” said Davis, who suspects the blackness and odor are the result of the ingredients interacting with oxygen, heat or moisture.

And while it’s not unheard of for substances to get into our bodies via the skin, such as the nicotine patch or estrogen creams, Davis says she doesn’t know of any therapy that actually pulls substances out of the body through the skin.

Davis doubts the foot pads are harmful, but says “we really just don’t know.”

As for energy boost the first day I tested the pad, Davis says there’s no way to know whether any psychological benefits are real or merely a placebo effect until controlled experiments are done.  (She doubts that will happen anytime soon since the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have authority over alternative therapies like Kinoki foot pads.)

Bottom Line:  While Kinoki foot pads probably won’t hurt you, they likely won’t help you either. Save your money and put it toward a nice pedicure.

Obviously you are not reading the comments before posting them...  the comment on Obama was unrelated, dis-tasteful and reflective of its creator...stupid.
I know One Thing that works as advertised:

The PED EGG!

I go barefoot every chance & get & have always had really rough heels.

One 5 minute session on the back porch & they are beautiful! Long toes and all!!!!!!!
OK, OK I bought them because the soles of my feet have been sore for years and no M.D. has been able to cure the problem. Well I have very high insteps on both feet and the pad barely touched the skin. However the part of the pad that contacted the skin was dark and ugly and the part that didn't touch the skin was still white!  So much for the air causes the color change.  The instructions on tha package says to put them on eitrher both feet or one at a time.  Either way to not put them on consecutrive days.  Now I put them on alternating feet each evening.  The color was not as dark the second application and after two applications the pads "STAYED WHITE".  So there is something going on and it's not my imagination.  Instructions also say to wait a week and use until color stays white for maintenance.  Something is making the color change and then stay white after several applications. Haven't tried that yet, but it sure didn't cure the soles of my feet being sore. Also didn't give me a sense of well being either.
Where the FDA lacks jurisdiction, the US Attorney General's Consumer Affairs Office and the FTC can investigate and proscecute for fraudulent claims made about the product in its advertizing and marketing. The real shame is that so much of the US populace is this gullible. Remember some of the other TV scams from the recent past? The ionizing braclet, magnet therapy for pain? etc.  This sucker's market is the product of our dumbed down education in the public school system, dominated and run by the left wong intelligencia for the last 40 years.  No wonder we're falling behind some third world and developing nations in math science and technology.
I TRIED LIFEDETOX PATCHES THEY WORKED CAUSE I FELT MORE ENERGY AND THEY HAVE LAB TESTS ON THE SITE .i HAD ARSENIC FROM SMOKEING IT BROUGHT THAT DOWN
I am perplexed by anyone that would believe this kind of claim (Kinoki pads) for even a second.
People are so easy to trick.  I guess it explains why Bush got "elected" not once but twice.
I almost went for it,but when I really thought about it,I started remembering all the other same type scams advertised in tabloids, they just happened to have enough money to advertise on T.V.
The body has a great method for detoxifying.  It has been in use for many (millions of years) and works great.  Its call THE LIVER.
Thanks for the info. You saved a LOT of people money, and prevented to makers scamming  a lot of people.
A college biology professor teaching us how things are absorbed through the skin, had us conduct an experiment. Rub plenty of raw garlic on your feet at night and you will awaken with garlic on your breath in the morning. If these foot pads contain green tea and vinegar, the promoters should truthfully proclaim such, stating their positive benefits which will be absorbed into the body.
To Voice of reason, theres a sucker born every minute. I can think of better ways to spend $20.00 than trying something like those pads. I agree with kokopelli.
What I am amazed at is that they can claim their magic snake oil and sell it to gullible citizens.  Don't we have laws against this?
Josh from GR Michigan, really cracked me up. I'm sorry if you really did poop your pants dude.
Thanks for the laughs and the heads up! I was just about to bite..)
ok Bought them at husbands request to try. Myself thinking it a plasebo. He believed it and felt better. If he wants to spend the money and it makes him feel better. Who am i to say differently. For myself I will not be indulging.
What ? Something advertised on TV that isn't true ? Does that mean that buying beer doesn't make hot babes automatically appear and demand that I show them a good time ?  Nahhhhh...that can't be true. Pass me a Bud.
It seems nuts to me. I almost spent the cash to check it out, but I thought it would be more fun and rewarding donate the $20 to a charity. If you ordered... get your money back ASAP.
They made my spincter itchy@@!
I tried them for two weeks   now I'm 2 inches shorter
Long toes are lovely; short stubs are creepy and gross!
This is the method for ebonizing wood. Removing the pad from the wrapper allows the vinigar/iron mixture react with the tannins in the green tea and the oxygen in the air. Lame.
Kinoki, yuk yuk yuk
As for the leeches.  There is a medical use for them.  Many years ago I worked in an intensive care unit and a man had a surgical flap but they couldn't establish the artilerial blood flows.  They used leeches to establish this otherwise the surgical flap would have failed and he would have lost it.  When the leeches are full they fall off.  The leeches are gotten from a company so they are certified for medical use.  I witnessed this procedure being done and the patient felt nothing.
Regarding the comment "Davis says she doesn’t know of any therapy that actually pulls substances out of the body through the skin"....

Epsom salt--research it on the web OR soak in an Epsom salt bath and YOU'LL KNOW it works.
I have tried them and they work for me, and I tried them because a friend of mine recommended them. I know quite a few people who use them and like the effects. Maybe they don't work scientifically, but they sure work in my reality!
There isa med spa in my area that is advertising a foot soak detox.  does that work?
Leeches don't pull anything through the skin. They slice it with sharp jaws and suck the blood thru the wound, somilar to mosquitos which drill thru the skin.
Way to go for the test. I knew there was a total funky scam on this product. they should stop the advertizementon this before somebody goes to court...
kinoki is just like selling dirty socks to people
kinoki pads ,crap.Women's big clean feet, beautiful.
HA HA HA!! Multi knuckled stink pickles!!!!  I could not agree more.  Stick those puppies in a knee high pair of Doc Martin jack boots and never let them see the light of day!
I never really paid attention to people's feet, maybe thier face or eyes or intelligence, but never their feet! Now though I think I'll decide if someones allowed in my life and home by the appearance of thier feet.  Ofcourse this foot patch won't work but I bet someone made a cool Mill from such a silly idea.
Listen up everybody - There already IS a mechanism for removing toxins from the body.  These incredible devices are ours free - THEY'RE CALLED KIDNEYS!!!  The best darn detoxifiying critters around.  Add to these the fantastic blob  called THE LIVER and you will have a perfect triumvirate of filters for the human body.  Sadly the ONLY person to benefit from this foot pad quackery is the person who's selling it to the masses.  I'm sure that HIs energy level rises proportionately with the number of noodniks out there who will purchase this modern day snake oil.  Don't smoke, drink plenty of water, get adequate rest, don't drink to excess, don't take illegal drugs or excessive narcotics and eat a healthy meal from time to time.  Your incredible body will be your friend for life - just stop beating it up so badly.

Hey Vance!  I am offended (like everyone in the entire country, doesn't matter what it's about).  Anyway, I have long toes. Never been criticized about them.  But damn, you should see my bunions.  Horrific!

PS - leeches are currently used in modern medicine and are even called medical leeches.  They are deliberatly applied to chronic, nonhealing skin ulcers since leeches will always eat the dead tissue and leave the new, granulation tissue.  The earlier blogger who denied their clinical application is incorrect.  Talk to any chronic wound care practitioner for the straight scoop on medical leeches.  They have NOTHING to do with these ridiculous foot pads but another person blogged on why the 'body wraps" cause instant weight loss?  Simple - the process of diaphoresis (sweating) will result in an 'instant' loss of water only.  And although sweat is a very dilute form of urine (in that the body eliminates water via the pores in order to cause external cooling via evaporation, it's not truly detoxification as in renal or hepatic function.  If these organs stop working - BAM, your're dead.
Voice of reason: most of us are intelligent enough to know they don't work without spending the $20. A fool and his money are soon parted.
I saw another report about these pads, and they simply reported that they in fact, contain a kitty litter like substance, that when combined with the heat of your foot, turn dark and moist, exactly like kitty litter in a pad would!!

How funny.....and millions of people have bought them!!  I do admit to being intrigued that the pads would "pull these toxins out of my body" but now know that the whole thing is a SCAM!!
AMAZING HOW CLOSE THESE SNAKE OIL ADVERTIZEMENTS ARE TO THE CAMPAINING THAT OBAMA DOES-SAME THEORY-SHOWS HOW MANY GULLIBLE PEOPLE R OUT THERE WITH FALSE HOPEN
That fact that ANYONE would even consider buying these things just shows you how stupid the average person is. I can't believe that any educated person would even discuss whether they are legitamate.
I AM SO GLAD SOMEONE LOOKED INTO THAT MESS AND THE LIES ABOUT THAT SO CALLED PRODUCT. ALL I CAN SAY IS GOOD ONE. BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THEY CAN ATTACH YOUR BANK ACCOUNT OVER AND OVER AGAIN
I appreciate the fact the someone does the "studies" so I don't have to. I bought a Pedegg because of your recommendation and love it. Now that works.
Lol I didn't care about the foot pads your comments are wonderful except the person who is offended by long toes 0-0 Weeee. I hate to say it but it reminds me of the tiddy bear or any other product you see in these sort of ads. Angel you should be a comedian love.
THE EXPERIMENT AT LEAST PROVED ONE THING.
THAT MANY OF THE PEOPLE MAKING COMMENTS ARE
AMOUNG THE DUMBEST IN THIS WORLD. LMAO,HARD TO BELIEVE
ANYONE WOULD SPEND THEIR MONEY ON THIS FRAUD.
PROVING ONCE AGAIN THAT A SUCKER REALLY IS
BORN EVERY MINUTE. WELL AT LEAST I ONLY BOUGHT
ONE PAIR.....NOTTTTTT
Just as most of you did, I nearly busted a gut over that commercial.
Another gut buster is the magnet that is placed around the gas line on your car to ionize the gas to make it go further. It's been around quite a while now. It should work about as good as the pad in this blog.
all you have to do is send the pads after use, to the texas lab for test, and you will have the answer if they pull bad things out . but I havent heard any thing about some one doing this. when someone does this. that should end the discusin.
I don't know.  I bought these a few weeks ago and tried them and though I can't say that they sucked any toxins out of my body, I have struggled with ingrown toenail problems and bad-looking toes for a long time.  I've tried lots of things, soaks, oils, and fungus stuff.  Do you know that after using the Kinokis only twice my toes look better than they have in years?  I'm so stunned I'm almost afraid to use them again.
I had to read EVERY ONE of these enjoyable replies. I am thankful to see that we still have a sense of humor in our country... that is, except for Telya in Kansas that still has to take a jab against President Bush in the reply. Hey, GET OVER IT and try to stay within the topic of discussion! (Small minds believe everything they hear... informercials included!).
Thanks for trying this product, many people were not convinced that is was real. Now we know.
I can't believe I read the whole thing! Comments that is.  Wow I thought I was the only person wasting
time,Phew! Sandra from Livington,Tx. RIGHT ON ! Anyone who is interested in a nice bridge in Brooklyn let me know. By the way what about lipo suction it
does take the fat out right?
I hate disgusting long, mangled toes too!! Cover them up people. I'm with you Vance!!
I was doubtful as well, so I applied a pad to my cheek (the one on the backside...LOL)and it was also black in the morning..yuck! Came to the conclusion that whatever is in the pad simply reacts to your skin and turns black. Glad to see someone else tested these!
