FitFlops: Shoes to tone your butt?

Posted: Thursday, July 17, 2008 4:04 PM

By Melissa Dahl, health editor

What it is: FitFlops, $49.99, www.thefitflop.com. Available at Bath and Body Works, Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret.

What it claims to do: Provide you with a “bum-blasting workout” disguised as a 30-minute walk. The manufacturer says a stroll in these shoes will trim and tone thighs, calves and glutes, thanks to its MicroWobbleboard technology (patent pending).

My experience: Promises, promises. I was lured into buying the FitFlops after an ad from Bath and Body Works for the shoes landed in my inbox. (I’m a sucker for punny subject lines: “Try These on for Thighs!”) The ad included an exhaustive, five-part diagram of the shoe that was impressively complicated, and the manufacturer’s Web site has actual warnings all over the place: “Use progressively to avoid excessive muscle soreness.” “Always consult your (doctor) prior to undertaking strenuous exercise.” (Plus, it’s recommended by Oprah!) Maybe after a few miles in these things, I’d look as good as this girl next time I felt like wearing only FitFlops and panties.

But if we’re really talking warnings, this is one I would’ve appreciated: FitFlops may be chunkier than they appear online. Also, a big, embarrassing “FITFLOPS” insignia is stamped on the top of the shoe (where the straps meet) and into the sole of the shoe (so you leave their branding wherever you tread). On top of all that, I’d also made the huge mistake of selecting soccer-mom pink.

Still, I started swapping a couple of gym workouts a week for a three-mile walk around a lake near my house while in FitFlops. As ugly as the chunkiness may be, it makes the FitFlops super comfy. Each step actually did feel a little easier on my feet than most of my other shoes. Maybe they really were absorbing shock, as the manufacturer claims – or at least, they were doing a better job of it than my Havaianas.

After a walk around the lake, I stood in line at a Starbucks and considered my backside. It felt like I had taken a really pathetic turn on the seated leg curl machine at the gym – the muscles in my legs had certainly been “activated,” but not much.

Since I figured the FitFlops weren’t enough to really replace a workout, I dared wearing them in public as I ran errands. Maybe the firmer area at the toe really does “promote faster push-off,” because I was hyperspeed-walking while wearing these things. Of course, that may have been because I didn’t want to be seen in them!

What the experts say: The FitFlops and, of course, the MicroWobbleboard, actually do provide some great fitness benefits, says msnbc.com fitness contributor Jay Blahnik, a Laguna Beach, Calif.-based fitness trainer who has worked with celebrities, including Jane Fonda. It just doesn’t provide benefits anyone really wants. The wobbleboard makes walking a little harder for your feet, which normally don’t have to work very hard during workouts, when they’re stuffed in cushy athletic shoes, Blahnik says.

“The concept of strengthening your feet – that’s a great concept, but it’s not going to lead you to smaller thighs or a smaller butt,” Blahnik says. He thinks the FitFlops might also help improve your posture and balance, which aren’t often at the top of my reasons to hit the gym.

Gina Lombardi, a personal trainer and the host of FIT TV’s “Fit Nation,”compares the wobbleboard embedded in the shoe to a super small version of a stability ball or a Bosu, and she agrees with Blahnik – the benefits are real, but a bit overblown.

“That wobbleboard in there is making it unstable for the foot, so the foot does have to work a little harder, and it does kind of project on up the legs, and your quads and your glutes have to work a little harder – but it’s still such a miniscule movement,” Lombardi says. “It’s hard for me to believe that it’s significant enough for it to ever replace a workout.”

Bottom line: Wearing FitFlops will strengthen your feet and improve your posture and balance – but honestly, who cares about that? Most of us are interested in the FitFlops’ promises of trimming and toning your backside, which the sandals only do on a very small scale. You will, however, be inadvertently training to racewalk at the Olympics with these guys.

I have fit flops, in the more subtle black. I wore them when I went to the mall and after walking around for a few hours, I sat in my car and thought...wow...my legs are tired! I enjoy them and since I need all the help I can get, I wear them almost all the time. They are super comfy! :)
I bought a pair of these (black and white ones are a bit more subdued) about a month ago.  Frankly, I love them.  I don't know about working out your legs and bum, but they are the most comfortable flip-flops I've ever had.  When I slip on my 10.00 flip-flops, now, they feel horrible on my feet.
I don't own a pair of FitFlops but I have to take exception to your commentary. After 20 years of dancing, martial arts, yoga, weight and aerobic training I can tell you first hand that if you really want to tone your backside and thighs then your posture and balance actually do matter a great deal. Proper posture promotes healthy circulation, better digestion, lower food intake and deeper breathing - all of which help to keep your weight lower. Better balance means that your muscle groups are working together the way they were meant to rather than straining against each other (the primary reason for such ailments as backaches!) which also promotes better muscle tone. Essentially, if the FitFlops do help with balance and posture then they are meeting their promises; perhaps it's just not in a way that is either strenuous or fast enough for most instant-gratification personalities. I certainly wouldn't recommend using them to replace your regular workout but it sounds like they weren't really intended to be used that way. You would get the most out of these shoes by wearing them on your everyday errands around town. If you don't care for the style of these shoes you could check-out the MBT athletic, walking and flip-flop shoes available at Bliss Spas (www.blissworld.com) which are based on a very similar technology.
I have a pair of bronze patent leather FitFlops.  I LOVE them!  They are extremely comfortable... and cute!  As far as the workout... does anyone really expect them to replace the daily gym routine?  I don't think so.  I didn't buy a pair of shoes with expectations of going from a size 6 to a size 2.  This was my thinking...  Just because I'm thin doesn't mean I'm toned.  If the shoes help even a little, hurray for the shoes!  If I'm trekkin' around after the kids and my feet don't hurt, hurray for the shoes!
Not sure how old the health editor is but personally, you should totally care about balance and posture. As you age (and we're talking 40), a women's balance decreases. Working on balance consistently can help prevent falls that as we age more can mean broken bones and for the elderly can be mean a serious decline in their health. And posture...poor posture leads to a myriad of issues in the back and shoulders including the dreaded 'non-specific' back pain. So, always incorporate balance and posture work into your weekly workouts. If you're doing pilates or yoga, you're on your way.
I too agree, I don't feel the burn my friend told me she felt in these. I can tell you however, that these are extremely comfortable and cute. I have flat feet and wore these for 8 hours at an amusement park and didn't encounter the lower back pain I would have had in other shoes. For that, I will extole the virtues of these shoes, even if my backside doesn't shrink!
tried these on at macys.no one ever seems to mention the material used on the straps between the toes in flip- flops.i found the fit fops material to be stiff and irritating.so i did not purchase a pair.i did like the spongy effect of the soles and would have bought them if they had opted for microfiber or real leather that was made into a thin in between toe strap.

I have a pair and I love them. I wear them the minute I get home from work and a majority of the weekend. I still do my regular exercise and when I wear them for my long city walks, it feels like I am killing two birds with one stone. I think these shoes do work and I do care about my posture etc...but I agree they went a bit overboard with their promise.
I tried these for a day, and then promptly gave them away.  They are ugly, and don't give you the leg and butt exercise they promise.  There is only one shoe I've found so far that does that -- the MBT.  When I wear my MBTs on a one- or two-mile walk, I can really feel it in my calves, hamstrings and glutes.  It's a great shoe, but with its curved sole it does take some getting used to!
I beg to differ regarding the idea of FitFlops providing health benefits that no one wants.  I LOVE my FitFlops and wear them all the time, including to work!  I have found that the strengthening of my feet, ankles and lower legs has markedly improved my balancing postures in my yoga practice.  My mother (who is 65 and has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for over 20 years) also loves her FitFlops.  She finds them to be extremely comfortable, even given the issues with her feet.  They would make great house shoes for people with foot problems, as they are easy to slip on and off, but actually provide the support you don't get from regular slippers.
Posture and balance really are important, especially in terms of the long-term health and stability of your body.

FitFlops rule!!!

P.S. The FitFlop logo is far less noticeable on the black shoes.
I was very disappointed in my Fit Flops. They kill the tops of my feet, I went a half of a size larger and hoped they would loosen up. No luck so far. The emblem on top is really ugly and they do not deliver $50.00 worth of toning.
I choose the silver fitflops and I absolutely love them.  You can barely see the logo and besides most things now a days have the logo on them, how about the big check mark on Nike stuff. When I walk in them my back does not hurt and that is what sold me on them I guess that is the posture improvment part. I am getting ready to get me another pair.
All that happened to me was that I am now hit with spam day after day in my inbox from giving my e-mail to the online ad for these flip-flops.  Will I ever purchase them - I don't think so!!!  I wish I had never investigated them. I hate spam, I never had a piece of spam enter my box until I gave the ad for the Victoria Secrets flip-flops my e-mail address.

I absolutely love them!!!  Walk the dog in them, do yoga in them, run errands.  I have no problem with the logo....but I was never foolish enough to believe that my thighs or butt would end up looking like those in the ad.

MBT knock-offs. Nice Try. There is only one MBT. What a pathetic rip-off.
I wholeheartedly disagree with this article.  I live in Chicago where my daily walk from the train station to work is about a mile (one-way).  FitFlops are my summer go-to shoe in lieu of bulky, hot, athletic shoes.  I bought them when they first came out in 2007 and used them all last summer and this summer.  My legs are much toner.  Trust me, they're better than a regular flip-flop, hands down.  I guess if you're not really walking and only using them to get in and out of the car while running errands, then you're not going to see results.  I use these 5 days a week, 30 minutes per day.  They may not be the most attractive footwear I have in my closet, but they're definitely the most comfortable!
You ask who cares about posture and balance???? Are you kidding? Good posture can help alleviate all sorts of skeletal and joint problems and pain, and good balance is a major factor in preventing falls that can lead to broken bones. If these can improve posture and balance, I'd say that's a pretty good thing. Some people might even think it's more important than a cute butt.
I'm curious how these would match up against a pair of MBT's (Masai Barefoot Techology), probably the ugliest shoes on the planet.  Has anyone tried both???

I have MBT's and love them.  Can't say that my ass looks any tighter but I think you actually have to take the shoes out of the closet and onto the pavement for that kind of progress.  Still, they're great shoes when I do have to be on my feet on hard surfaces for long periods of time.  Forget wearing them on the grass unless you want a sprained ankle.

So, has anyone tried both?  Any of these problems pop up with FitFlops?
What do you mean I can't tone my butt with flip flops?!!?!
Hey whatever happened to "earth shoes"??  I am probably dating myself here, but I remember those from when I was a teenager.  Same thing, they were suppose to build up your legs, etc.  The heel was lower than the ball of the foot when you walked.  They advertised that it was like "walking in sand".  Everybody wore them, and although not a workout, they did tend to tone your legs a bit.  Took some getting use to walking in them, but once you did they were comfortable.  Maybe the flipflops don't firm the thighs and derrier quite as promised, that's o.k. a little exercise is better than none.  As for them being unattractive, I haven't seen too many flipflops that were that pretty anyway.
How do FitFlops compare to MBTs (Masai Barefoot Technology)?  Is it the same thing?
I bought the fitflops thinking the same thing- that they'll change my life.  Can't say that I see a huge difference in my butt or thighs, but it's done one thing- got me walking more to see if they "work".  So the increase in walking has helped and I will vouch for the fact that they are the MOST comfortable shoe I've ever put on!  I don't regret my $50 flip flop purchase- but I cannot say that there is anywhere near $50 worth of material on these shoes!
I have both fit flops and MBT.  I bought them both in a moment of weakness.  I wear one or the other at work and during errands. I don't think they made my thighs thinner, but I have less cellulite on my backside.  The cellulite on the front of my thighs has not changed.  My calves have a much more sculpted look, which is nice for skirts.  This happened over the course of a year.  These shoes are not a miracle cure, just a way to get a little more workout into a busy schedule.  And they tightened up my hips a little, so complimenting them with yoga is a good idea.  If you have the money to spend it doesn't hurt. But if you're stressing about making rent, don't do it.

The comment about the hard material in the front toe was true for the fit flops.  It took a long time to make those sandals comfortable.  But I've worn them for hours and had no back pain.  I also have the hideous 2 inch MBT sneaker.  If I was going to buy them now I would definitely buy the slightly less hideous mary janes.  The MBTs are good for squeezing a little extra fitness in on vacation, running errands, and during work (if you don't have a job where you’re completely stuck to a desk).
I bought the white ones and also walked around a lake, 3 miles in total. I liked the sole, design is not to my liking nor are the blisters I have on each toe from where the strap wore. I am hoping they just need to be broken in....
I have 2 sets of them and am thinking about a third pair!  They may not be the end all be all in fashion but they are the most comfortable pair of sandals (flip flops or not) that I own.  I didn't think it would really tone my legs but the posture is a big issue for me because I have back problems.  I wear these at the mall and no problem with my back.  People actually stop and ask me where I got my shoes.  I think they are great.  Just need more styles and a few more colors!!!
I posted a message about balance and posture earlier and it wasn't approved while another was? Was it because I mentioned the health editor should care???You guys are a bit too picky about what posts get approved and which ones don't. You should only moderate those that are not at all appropriate...not simply cause you don't like the post.
Love the Fitflops!  Great for walking long distance in, especially on hot days when tennis shoes would feel too hot.  As for looks, well folks what do you want for $50 a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos?  What are we 17 again?  They are great for those of us who hate the stinky boring gyms, and live in beautiful places to walk in.
I have MS and thought that this might help me keep my muscles (what little is left) from going soft or weak.(which MS can do). After about two weeks of wearing them, I had an MS Attack. I can't say it was the shoes, but seeing as how I hadn't had an attack in two years, I'm pretty confident it was the shoes.

So, the shoes probably did what they were supposed to do -- give you a little mini workout while you walk around -- but if your muscles and strength is already subpar or compromised, they could make matters worse.

Good luck!
Your health editor needs to grow up. Posture and balance are the foundation to good exerciase that is safe. I'd rather be able to move around than have a sculpted butt if I could only have one or the other.
I got my fit flops 2 days ago, and I am a certified couch potato. I wore them to do my errands last 2 days, and I can say that they are doing something, as my calves are tight, almost cramping.   That does not happen when I wear my regular flip flops.   The shoes are comforable, and I agree with others that it is helping my posture, as my back did not ache when I was standing in line at stores, like it usually does.  So perhaps these are really made with us non exercisers in mind.   I think they are going to be great for me!
Love them - very comfortable, I bought 2 pairs, one for outside and one for inside the home. I can walk for miles and not get tired. they support the feet well as opposed to regular flip flops - but, they dont do a darn thing to shape your butt though!!
Women are pathetic. How ignorant can you people be? Stop obsessing over your weights and maybe guys will respect you some more!
I have a pair of a similar product. THey are flip-flops except they are made of cast iron. They hurt like hell but they give you a great workout. Each weighs in at 14 pounds.
I got mine last year & love them. I have a short right leg ( 1/4" shorter than my left)& wear a lift in that shoe.My lifts wore down causing a tilted pelvis & tight back muscles. I also work out a lot & wound up with major muscle imbalances that cause low back pain. I went to a chiropractor & started regular yoga classes but still had sore back muscles at the end of the school day from all the standing...I'm a teacher. When I started wearing the fitflops every day there was a dramatic improvement in my lower back pain. They exercise my front hip flexors when I walk; I can feel my front thigh, calf & glute muscles working. When the hip muscles are tight, esp the psoas muscle ( front hip flexor) it can cause low back pain. I do daily yoga stretches and the fit flops complement my yoga practice by providing a constant workout & keeping my posture & balance in order. Like some other posters said, posture & balance are VERY important. I can walk long distances in them & even use them to warm up my legs muscles before gym classes. My back pain is almost gone now.
The best shoes I have EVER worn.  I will put them on with socks this winter, and I don't care about the looks. (Without socks they are simply very cute.) My back is so grateful I have found them!
From the website:
"The bottom line: It only takes a pair of FitFlops and a set of stairs to lift, shape and tighten your tush! Just find a long set of stairs somewhere, put your FitFlops on, and climb them two at a time (clenching and squeezing your bottom as you go). This will challenge the hip extensor muscles (the hamstrings and glutes) by stimulating them with a bigger load, and also a longer activation time. Start with 10 big steps a day and work up to 20, 40, or 100 a day."

Well duh, if you walk up stairs 2 at a time over and over again that would be a workout, whether you are wearing these shoes or not. They may very well be comfortable and may help with posture which is important, but an exercise...I think not.
I don't own a pair of "FitFlops" but i do know that walking three miles a day every day, regardless what what shoes you're wearing--will offer the benefits of exercise.  But it seems that for people who have poor posture this may be a good way to begin correcting it.
I do own a pair of Fit-Flops, and I love them. I have noticed a differenc in my legs. Maybe not my butt, but my legs. you can just wear them every once in a  while. I wear mine whenever i can. which is pretty much anywhere but work.
I don't know what the heck these people are talking about.  I have Fit Flops in four different colors and I love them.  They are extremely comfortable and after walking for some distance in them I can really feel and see the difference in my legs.  I would recommend them even though I think they are quite a bit too expensive.
I disagree with the author that she feels that strong foot muscles are unimportant. When I developed plantar fasciitis, my doctor sent me to a physcial therapist for exercises to strenghten my foot muscles - something that is difficult to do based on how the muscles in the foot are constructed. Look in any runner's sports store and you will see many many items for sale that are made to specifically strenghten foot muscles (including wobbleboards.) I don't have these shoes, but now that I've read the review, I'll probabbly give them a try. Not to make my tush tinier, but as another way to strengten my weakened foot muscles while I'm running around town. It would be nice to be able to wear a pair of supportive sandals again while playing in the summer heat, instead of being forced to wear supportive inserts in hot shoes.
I bought a pair last year and noticed a huge difference in my calves. They became toned and sleeker. Not so much for the thighs or butt, but I'll take the calves. I'm wearing them this summer and after a winter of not much activity, my calves weren't so toned. Didn't take long at all for the FitFlops to do their magic on me! I highly recommend them!!!
I had to get a friend to purchase these shoes for me while visiting the UK a few mths ago because you couldn't find them in Canada at the time.  Now they're starting to pop up in various stores. I never bought into the “tone up your legs while you walk” concept, the major reasons that sold me on these sandals were quite different. Many ppl with feet & lower back problems raved about the comfort of these shoes.  I had my friend bring me back 2 pairs of the STARWALKER II in Black & Bronze, now I wish that I had gotten the Silver as well.  I LOVE these shoes for the comfort, support and shock absorption, although I must admit that after walking in them for long periods you do start to feel something in the thighs.  The only thing missing is an ARCH SUPPORT, but I rectified that by inserting the gel arch supports for women by Dr. Scholl's, you peel and stick.  Hopefully the company will improve the shape with new styles and market it differently emphasizing the TRUE benefits, posture, balance, support, shock absorption and especially comfort!
i don't own a pair of fitflops and i really don't have an opion on them other then i refuse to pay50 dollars for flip flops.and most of these comments seem to somehow make the buyers  feel better that they spent that money and others act like 50 dollars is chump change.yet others are blaming ill health on them..so lets just say buyers beware and if its too good to be true.its too good to be true!
I bought the FitFlops on a whim. I bought them because the ad said they had good support and would work the muscles in my legs and feet differently.  We camp in the summer and I am always looking for shoes I can weare at the campground that will be comfortable and not be bad for my feet. I also have Plantar Fasciitis and have trouble walking long distances.  The first time I wore my FitFlops I fell in love with them.  The band between the toe is a little wide, but it didn't take long to get used to it.  I can walk long distances and shop with no foot pain.

After longer walks I do notice my calves are somewhat tired, but it's the kind of tired I get after a good workout.  I know the shoes are working for me.  I would buy them again and have recommended them to friends.
I have tried the fitflops and I actually LIKE the looks but thought the straps were stiff/thin and could have been a lot softer.  I sent them back after wearing them around the house for five minutes and seeing a segment on 60 Minutes saying all that was said here.  I DO however have a pair of MBTs (EARTH)thongs that are really really nice.  Very SOFT PRETTY leather straps and sueded foot bed.  AND the EARTH shoes actually DO make you stand straight and exercise your calves, etc.  EARTH shoes have come a long way in looks.  Check them out.
I LOVE MINE !!!! I agree I don't think anyone is expecting them to replace working out. I received mine as a requested Birthday gift from my husband. Went to the BLiss website and ordered the black patent which I thought would go with my daily work wear - fortunately I can wear them to work I have to say - since purchasing in June - I have not worn anything else except when absolutely necessary-7 days a weeks - all day - they are the most comfortable shoe / flip flop I have ever had on my feet.. I just wish they would come up with something for the cold weather .. I will miss them this winter when I can no longer get away with wearing them . This is my first comment on any product - that is how much - I LOVE MY FIT FLOPS !!!!
