FitFlops: Shoes to tone your butt?

Posted: Thursday, July 17, 2008 4:04 PM

By Melissa Dahl, health editor

What it is: FitFlops, $49.99, www.thefitflop.com. Available at Bath and Body Works, Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret.

What it claims to do: Provide you with a “bum-blasting workout” disguised as a 30-minute walk. The manufacturer says a stroll in these shoes will trim and tone thighs, calves and glutes, thanks to its MicroWobbleboard technology (patent pending).

My experience: Promises, promises. I was lured into buying the FitFlops after an ad from Bath and Body Works for the shoes landed in my inbox. (I’m a sucker for punny subject lines: “Try These on for Thighs!”) The ad included an exhaustive, five-part diagram of the shoe that was impressively complicated, and the manufacturer’s Web site has actual warnings all over the place: “Use progressively to avoid excessive muscle soreness.” “Always consult your (doctor) prior to undertaking strenuous exercise.” (Plus, it’s recommended by Oprah!) Maybe after a few miles in these things, I’d look as good as this girl next time I felt like wearing only FitFlops and panties.

But if we’re really talking warnings, this is one I would’ve appreciated: FitFlops may be chunkier than they appear online. Also, a big, embarrassing “FITFLOPS” insignia is stamped on the top of the shoe (where the straps meet) and into the sole of the shoe (so you leave their branding wherever you tread). On top of all that, I’d also made the huge mistake of selecting soccer-mom pink.

Still, I started swapping a couple of gym workouts a week for a three-mile walk around a lake near my house while in FitFlops. As ugly as the chunkiness may be, it makes the FitFlops super comfy. Each step actually did feel a little easier on my feet than most of my other shoes. Maybe they really were absorbing shock, as the manufacturer claims – or at least, they were doing a better job of it than my Havaianas.

After a walk around the lake, I stood in line at a Starbucks and considered my backside. It felt like I had taken a really pathetic turn on the seated leg curl machine at the gym – the muscles in my legs had certainly been “activated,” but not much.

Since I figured the FitFlops weren’t enough to really replace a workout, I dared wearing them in public as I ran errands. Maybe the firmer area at the toe really does “promote faster push-off,” because I was hyperspeed-walking while wearing these things. Of course, that may have been because I didn’t want to be seen in them!

What the experts say: The FitFlops and, of course, the MicroWobbleboard, actually do provide some great fitness benefits, says msnbc.com fitness contributor Jay Blahnik, a Laguna Beach, Calif.-based fitness trainer who has worked with celebrities, including Jane Fonda. It just doesn’t provide benefits anyone really wants. The wobbleboard makes walking a little harder for your feet, which normally don’t have to work very hard during workouts, when they’re stuffed in cushy athletic shoes, Blahnik says.

“The concept of strengthening your feet – that’s a great concept, but it’s not going to lead you to smaller thighs or a smaller butt,” Blahnik says. He thinks the FitFlops might also help improve your posture and balance, which aren’t often at the top of my reasons to hit the gym.

Gina Lombardi, a personal trainer and the host of FIT TV’s “Fit Nation,”compares the wobbleboard embedded in the shoe to a super small version of a stability ball or a Bosu, and she agrees with Blahnik – the benefits are real, but a bit overblown.

“That wobbleboard in there is making it unstable for the foot, so the foot does have to work a little harder, and it does kind of project on up the legs, and your quads and your glutes have to work a little harder – but it’s still such a miniscule movement,” Lombardi says. “It’s hard for me to believe that it’s significant enough for it to ever replace a workout.”

Bottom line: Wearing FitFlops will strengthen your feet and improve your posture and balance – but honestly, who cares about that? Most of us are interested in the FitFlops’ promises of trimming and toning your backside, which the sandals only do on a very small scale. You will, however, be inadvertently training to racewalk at the Olympics with these guys.

A health editor who doesn't think posture and balance are important??  Part of the reason medical insurance fees are so high is that too many people have dysfunctional bodies because of bad postural alignment and poor balance.  They "step off a curb wrong" and break an ankle, or slip on a piece of lettuce at a supermarket and instead of catching themselves, they fall down and need back/hip/whatever surgery, and end up lifing out on physical therapy.  Then there are those who have neck and back problems due to a lifetime of bad posture who had to have surgery because they got rear-ended at 2 mph or a small book fell off a shelf and landed on their head and caused a herniated disc. And a lot of these people are in their 20's and 30's!  I don't care how old you are, you shouldn't break your ankle when you step off a curb wrong.  At worst, you might roll your ankle, then you shake it off and keep walking.
I love my fitflops... i went vacationing in Europe and walked everywhere. When using my fit flops i was less tired at the end of the day than if i used my tennis shoes. On top of that i had no back aches what so ever. So what if i dont loose 5 inches in a week... at least my feet aren't sore. And i agree with everyone who has said balance and posture are important... why do you think dancers have such great bodies...
I love my FitFlops.  I was worried about the strap at first, but it is quite comfortable.  I also do quite a bit of standing and these shoes give me great support.
i have the black pair of fitflops and I love them. I have horribel back problems and flat feet. They have helped me actually walk around a bit longer without so much pain. I don't know what the health editor is talking about!
Fitflops are the most comfortable 'shoe' in my closet and I wear them as much as possible. The strap angled over my arch caused a blister and small scar, but the trade off for comfort was worth the effort.  Agree that more styles and colors are needed.
Have the fit flops and am not impressed.  Honestly, they rub the tops of my feet and inside of my toes so raw, I really can't wear them.  Please change the material!
I have flat feet and wear Dansko clogs in the winter, MBTs for exercise and just got FitFlops in May.  I had previously been wearing Gaiaim yoga toes in the house. I think FitFlops give excellent support.  When I go from winter to summer shoes, sandals, etc. strain my arches, and I get terrible back, hip and knee pain.  I can wear MBTs all day long and walk miles. And I can do the same in FitFlops. In my opinion they are well worth the money if you want a pair of open toe sandals to slip on with shorts or a skirt instead of Danskos or MBTs.
These really do feel like you must work a little harder, move a little more sure-footedly.  I have worn them for a couple of hours several different times.  My discovery is that for some reason, like Earth shoes, and Birkenstocks, which I had quite a few pairs of, these Fit-Flops cause pain in my hips!  Weird, but true, so I do not wear them as often as I could.  I move quickly, and cover a lot of ground in a day, so maybe it's me, and the problem is the camber of the shoe (the angle of the sole front to back and side to side.)
I have never worn MBT shoes-but they look really goofy to me.  I have owned FitFlops for about 5 months now.  I wear them everywhere.  The first few days, one of my feet hurt terribly across the top.  If they had cost $4.99, I would have pitched them, but the price tag kept me trying to get used to them.  After I got used to them, I think I started walking straighter in them, and then it hit!  I should say first that I am not a work out person-I am in horrible shape, but with that said, my butt was so sore, I had to plan sitting down for a few days.  This, of course, made me ecstatic-my fifty bucks were paying off!  I am not sore anymore, but I have noticed a difference in the "height" of my butt.  I love them--will replace this pair when they wear out.
Do you get one of those vibrating belts that supposedly tones your abs when you purchase a pair of these?
I borrowed my sister's broken-in Fit Flops and found them to be comfortable. But a workout? Please! I have 3 pair of MBTs which I wear nearly all the time. They certainly step your walk up a couple of notches. Fit Flops and other similar brands are useless MBT wannabes. If it's a workout you're after, spend some time at the gym. If you wear MBTs and get off your butt, you will see a difference.
I bought a silver pair and liked them so much that I orderred a pink pair. The silver have vinyl/plastic uppers and fit great. The pink ones are the original canvass strap and are so big I walk out of them. Other than that, they are amazingly comfortable. I have 2 overused knees and plantar fascitis in one heel so I can't wear "cheap" summer shoes, but I don't want to wear good cross trainers all the time either. These are really supportive (although I thnk the idea of using them for "toning" is garbage) I have always hated having a strap between my toes, but these are so comfortable I don't even notice it
I bought a pair of silver ones, and fell in love with them!  They run large however, so i bought a second pair in lime green, and a size smaller, and i use them more than any other sandal i have!  The silver ones i use for the house and the pool!  Most awesome shoe.  My legs do burn more after walking with these as opposed to my sneakers and any other walking shoe i have.  I just love them!!!
almost everyone cares about posture so i dont know what this article is trying to imply
I bought a pair of fitflops & they are so comfy. They are much more comfy & supportive than regular flip flops.
I do see a difference in my legs & my hips are very sore from them. But then again I walk every day.
Whether they tone you or not, I just think they are very comfy.

Bottom line if you want to lose weight & tone up. It's not a secret; eat right, excercise & drink a lot of water.
I just bought these shoes in black patent yesterday, and could barely even read the logo on the top.  I'm living in Australia for a few years and had no idea what these shoes "were all about", but when I tried them on they were amazing.

Still having no idea that these shoes were exercise shoes I wore them all day today.  At first the part where the strap hits the sole near your arch felt a little rough, but within 20 minutes that had resolved itself.  When I got home tonight after just doing errands and normal stuff my calves, butt and thighs are all feeling like I had a great workout... of course it was the first day.  This is actually how I got to this msnbc blog because I thought there must be something about these shoes!  Wow, I love them and I am so excited to have found them.  I have arthritis/bone spur in my big toe and need a shoe with a hard flat sole-- these were incredibly comfortable and I'll be wearing them everyday.
I have a pair, they are TERRIBLE for walking any kind of distance, which defeats the idea of toning while walking in them. Sure, the soles are thick and spongy therefore comfortable. But they are so inflexible that walking any reasonable distance in them (not just on short errands etc) made my feet really hurt. It wasn't about balance, or fitness, it was the design and inflexible sole. I feel like a sucker for falling for something like this.
Balance is VERY important. My elderly father-in-law has poor balance and leg strength and we're terrified he's going to fall and not be able to reach a phone someday soon.  He didn't bother to do anything to stay or get in shape for the last 40 years at least because he didn't have to, and now he's paying the price with interest.  AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.
I bought a pair of FitFlops last Spring and wore them everyday straight for 6 months.  I lost 40 lbs and my legs and butt are toner than they have been in years!  I swear by these shoes!  I can't tell you how many people I have turned on to them!  Seriously, try them, they are the best investment I've made all year!
Exercises are the only way to go for a toned butt - http://www.tonedbutt.com
I love my Fitflops.  I have plantar fasciitis.  Fitflops are the only sandal-type shoe that I can wear without having searing pain in my heels.  I already have killer calves from spin class so I can't attest to Fitflops value in develping calve muscles.  The Fitflop insignia is not so noticeable on the black sandals.  I think the company should keep their advertising to the sole and instep.
Nothing comes between me and my Havaianas! :)
I have two pairs of Fitflops and I absolutely love them.  They are the most comfortable footwear I have ever worn.  I wear them when I excercise and everyday use and I wear them indoors and outdoors.  I do think they help with slimming and toning the legs.  I also have plantar fasciitis and the shoes are so cushiony that my heel doesnt hurt as much when I wear them.  I thought 50 dollars was a reasonable price for this product.  They last a long time as Ive had mine nearly two years and they have a lot of wear left in them still.
I don't know if they will really work as they say, but I will say they are the greatest, most comfortable shoe I own. My feet have been a problem -- I've got those expensive orthotics, cortizone shots and anything else I can find -- and thus walking any length just hurts too much. But with these babies on, I can walk for miles. I absolutely recommend them for people who blame their bad feet for not exercising more. Mine are also quite nice looking -- black with white accent.
I have a bad ankle after a botched surgery on my tibia back in 1988. I get cramps often in my foot that extend across the top of my foot, down the outside and into the arch. I'm such a creature of habit to just grab a cheap pair of flip flops for summer and just grin and bear it. One day I was out for a drive and with no where else to park at the mall, I went in through the Macy's door. I decided to take a look at their summer shoes. I came across fitflops. I've never heard of them and least of all heard what they were all about. I liked how they looked and it fit my needs. The real test was when I took off my cheap $10 flipflops and put these on. INSTANTLY, the cramp on the top of my foot had gone! I felt energized enough to walk throughout the mall a bit which I wound up doing for about 2 hours. I'm on disability for a rare bone disease and advanced osteoarthritis. I am 37 years old. This is the best my foot has felt in many years. I do have balance and posture issues related to my bone disease, curvature of the spine, rotated pelvis, etc...I wound up buying 3 pairs of these that night and I wear them ever since. I'm in the process of buying a 4th pair. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sneakers! This just might be the only shoe I will ever own. Who cares about the gym?! I can't do workouts anyway. Any little bit that I can do, helps a lot.
I was hoping that it would work but oh well, it doesn't. They are comfy and I wear them all the time.
I'm in my 30's and only 115 lbs so I'm not looking to really lose weight, however after sitting at a desk all day, every day, I thought any exercise would be better than what I'm doing now.  I literally just bought my first pair of FitFlops a couple of hours ago and I am AMAZED.  I just took my dog for a walk around the block and I can truly feel my calves working.  It felt very similar to walking on the beach for an hour, even though the walk was a brisk one around the block for just 15 minutes.  I know I'll buy more and will be recommending these to others.
I found the readers' comments to be more credible and helpful vs. Dahl's article. Dahl seems to be expecting a miracle from a pair of flops. Um, not the total package for a toned body. That also includes regular cardio, healthy diet, lots of water, good sleep and good attitude--People like Dahl are looking for a "quick fix", a short-cut to perfection, but let's be realistic. I'm buying the Fit Flops and the Earth Exerfit sandals to amp up my walks, which I do very regularly. I believe that the technology put into these shoe designs are worthy of the price and also a realistic period of time to try out--consistently, not once in a blue moon.
I purchased one pair of black fit flops and loved them so much that I went back and bought the brown ones. I am now considering the ones with the fringe on them. Walking in the mall doesn't hurt my feet anymore; going on errands is a breeze. I really like them; as far as exercise I am sure that they work to some extent, but I wouldn't give up regular exercise; they are just very comfortable for me.
I just bought a pair - can't wait to try them.  They are the only flip-flop that has arch support (which I desperately need) that I have seen.  My physical therapist told me I have to have shoes with arch support (Achilles tendinitis in both heels) - and this is my compromise between hot athletic shoes and my favorite sandals.  Living in Hawaii, you gotta have "slippahs" on or you get too hot!
I love my fitflops.  I have 4 pairs for summer use.  I also bought a pair of the clogs.  Talk about comfort.  I have flat feet and I am a diabetic.  I recommend fitflops to anyone who is in the same health condition as me.  I can walk for miles with them on and I've never had a problem with my feet.
I bought the black patent FitFlops to wear on an all day outing in Santa Barbara. I knew this would be the true test of comfort. I have three herniated disks and walking or standing is painful for me although I do maintain a regular exercise program and I'm very fit. At the end of the day I was amazed at how my back felt, I was pain free and grateful to have found a casual shoe that really works. As for the MBT's they are so ugly and overpriced.  I will purchase another pair soon, and will buy them for my daughter who has flat feet.
I have fitflops (3 pair) and love them   I have feet problems and can actually wear them all day without pain.  I also have a few pair of earth shoes.  Love them... can also wear them without pain.  Didn't need expensive shoes until I hit my forties...now I am paying with pain for all the cheap shoes I wore or so many years.  My MBTs are ok -- bought them when they first came out and at that time they didn't have much support.  Also have a pair of Z Coils...fun.  Each pair (different brands) has it advantages and disadvantages.  I am just grateful to have some shoes that are comfortable when I am on my feel all day.

just bought them today,  I have low back issues. shopped all day with much less back pain than normal.
Feels funny when I took them off to walk barefoot.  I like them and plan to walk more, especial if my back does not hurt.
I bought a pair of black ones.  I like them and wear them around the house and for running errands.  They are also helpful at work when I have to walk in bwteeen buildings (almost a 1/2 mile).  The biggest benefit for me is that my low back pain is not as prominant as it was I am walking faster.  I wore them all day at Disneyland and it really made a difference.  My only complaint is that they squeek.
I tried both and am sticking with Exerfit by Earth. No more back issues and mt plantar fascitis is better as well. Earth shoes were recommended by my podiatrist!
Well, I certainly don't believe a shoe can replace a work out, but I just bought my first pair of FitFlops and I love them. I got white and the logo is very difficult to see. I have bad knees and these cushy sandals are a relief for me. My only complaint is the strap between the toes but I am use to Birkenstock's with no strap. After just 2 days, they are getting worn in. From a barefoot lover, I love these more.
I got mine in light pink and in just a few days have had several compliments on them.  So far they are comfy, although the part in between the toes are stiff and might not feel too good after a few hours. A friend also has a pair, wore them to a swim meet, standing for hours and said her lower back did not ache like it normally does.  I don't know about the toning, but I really do not think they are as ugly as some have claimed and they are pretty comfortable.
I bought a pair of beautiful gold fit flops three weeks ago and have been pottering around in them to get used to them. Within a day, my knees which had been giving me gip, were pain free. Yesterday I decided to really trial them and walked at full pelt from Waterloo to the Tate Modern - a good mile - both ways. When I got home, I really felt like I had been doing some serious exercises especially my butt, as you call it. The impact of which is still evident today! i can honestly say that they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn in my life and I am rather hoping there will be a good looking winter range.
my fit flops are the best. My partner jet washed my other ones to try to clean them for me, and damaged the soles so I got a new pair in purple!!! I had a baby 14 weeks ago, and with diet, my butt is as good as it was before!!I love them. They are the comfyiest ever.. and I used to manage a shoe shop before kids. So I have loads of shoes!!! Having a new baby, I have been getting back ache, but I feel my fit flops have made a difference. I couldnt recommend them highly enough. Just remember them clean them yourself, and not let the bloke go mad with the pressure washer!!! I LOVE MY FIT FLOPS!!!!
i bought fit-flops & i love them.they are so comfortable.my legs are sore after using them the whloe day!
I tried them on and they didn't fit well at all.  I have a bit of a high arch *but not TOO high* and I couldn't get my foot to move all the way forward to the toe strap.  So, they felt really uncomfortable.  I did not purchase.
LOVE THEM!!!Having a bone spur on my heel, I needed a sandal with some support.  Buying my first pair in Santa Cruz last summer and now owning 4 pair, I couldn't live without them.  They are so comfortable and I no longer have any pain.  They are wonderful! I won't wear flip flops again.
Ya, we get it they are comfy, they feel like Crocs and they are just as ugly as Crocs too, but do they work?? I've had them for 3 months and no results that I can claim, does anyone else get sore at the hips when they wear these, because I sure do!
I walked about 10 miles around Chicago in my new bronze FitFlops the first day I purchased them.  My legs and feet never felt any better in my expensive athletic shoes.
Strange as it may sound, my husband commented that very evening that my calves looked great -- HAD TO BE THE SHOES!!
I actually tried my roommates pair and I LOVE them but not for toning my butt.  I have chronic lower back pain.  Probably a combination of having too much flexibility in my back which tilts my pelvis too much and not enough core strength to keep me straight.  The fitflops tilt me the right way and relieve pressure from my lower back.  They are the only shoes I wear now (even to work) and I guess I'll have to buy the clogs for the winter (not my favorite look but worth not having lower back pain).
I just got my Fit Flops today, and I love them. A friend of mine has a pair, and she said over a period of time, wearing them everywhere, she toned up her legs and actually lost some weight. As a former dancer and athlete, I cannot believe that a health editor would poo-poo the absolute importance of good posture. I live on a sailboat in a warm climate and am CONSTANTLY in flip flops. I am so pleased to finally have a pair that are comfortable and good for your core strengthening as well. As far as the lady who was "embarrassed" by the logo...well, that's just silly. It's not like they say "I bought these because I think I have a fat ass!"  Although I would probably wear them anyway, because I don't really care about stuff like that. I love them, I was perfectly content to pay $50.00 for them, and for me, now adays, that's not chump change.  And I will be perfectly happy to buy another pair when the time comes. I, of course, chose the more subtle black suede.......:)
I have an ankle fusion and have to wear the MBT's and Finn Comfort shoes. Does anyone that may have foot problems like mine wear the fitflops?
What about the boots/clogs? Do they seem to work the foot as well as the flops?  I'm not a big fan of between-the-toe style.
I feel a difference with my fit flops in toning the upper part of my legs, which are hard for me to tone.
I have some lower back pain which I think may be caused by wearing them...perhaps they are also affecting my core? Any one else get lower back pain?
