Zip! 5-Hour Energy packs a punch

What it is: 5-Hour Energy, a teeny, 2-fl. oz. drink priced at about $3.99.

What it claims to do:  Boost your energy for five hours – without the caffeine crash later.

My experience: I’ve recently discovered that I am becoming old. Not physically old, mind you; I’m still several weeks shy of my 24th birthday. No, the other, lamer kind of old – the kind who secretly wants to be asleep by 11 on a Friday night. The younger of the voices in my head, however, rarely allows this, and constantly berates me to act my age. And so began my quest to find an energy drink that I can stomach – and one that actually works.

Coffee makes me jittery, and most energy drinks taste horrible; plus, many of them have tons of sugar and upwards of 200 calories. That’s what initially drew me to the 5-Hour Energy drink: It has only four calories and no sugar. I was skeptical that a drink this little could actually do what it claims, but I tried it on a Friday night, at dinner with a friend.

It definitely has that strange chemical-y taste that all energy drinks share, but at only 2 ounces, it’s all over in just a couple of sips. (The lemon-lime flavor, in my opinion, is the least offensive. Avoid mixed berry at all costs – it’s reminiscent of cough syrup.) And before I really even realized it, I was peppier and in the mood to stay out and have some fun. My friend went home after dinner, and normally, I’d have been tempted to do the same – but instead, I headed to a friend’s birthday festivities (and had a lovely, alert time).

The next morning, my boyfriend had agreed to help me move into my new apartment, and when I woke up, I tried another one of these little energy drinks – and then had the motivation to move two carloads full of my stuff over to my new place by myself! When he finally dragged himself out of bed and over to my place at 11, loading up what was left of my stuff into his truck only took 15 minutes.

This elixir has a gradual way of working to boost your energy, and in the same way that it slowly perks you up,  it gently lowers you back down a few hours later. I tried it again a several times in the morning before work, and I never got any jitters – and they’re not kidding about the lack of a crash later.

I knew it worked to boost my energy, but still, the science-experiment taste worried me – what’s in this stuff?

What the expert says: New York City dietitian Bonnie Dix-Taub sounded a little miffed when I told her of the wonders of the 5-Hour Energy drink and how well it seemed to work for me. It may make you peppier, she said, “but what is the price you’re paying for the possibility of energy?”

She helped me unpack the mysteries of the 5-Hour Energy drink’s ingredients. It contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, but a closer look at some of the other ingredients listed on the drink's nutrition facts is pretty astounding:

  • Niacin: 30 milligrams, or 150 percent of the recommended daily value
  • Vitamin B6: 40 milligrams, or 2,000 percent daily value
  • Vitamin B12: 500 micrograms (0.5 milligrams), or 8,333 percent daily value

But what does it all mean? “Just because a little of something is good doesn’t mean a lot is better,” Taub-Dix says. So all of these nutrients (all B vitamins) are necessary, but the excessive amounts are not – and too much of some nutrients can even be dangerous, she says.

Niacin helps the digestive system, nerves and skin to function properly, and the recommended daily amount for adults is 14 milligrams a day; a bottle of 5-Hour Energy has twice that. Too much niacin can cause your face to flush and feel itchy, which can last for 15 to 30 minutes. (To be fair, the back of the bottle notes the possibility of a niacin flush.)

“It’s not that likely that you’re going to get an overdose of B12,” Taub-Dix says, but too much B6 (more than 200 milligrams – or about five bottles of 5-Hour Energy) can cause nerve toxicity, which messes with your muscle coordination and can make you seriously clumsy, or even paralyzed. The label warns consumers not to drink more than two bottles a day.

It’s more healthful to get your daily dose of these vitamins in foods like fish or dairy products, Taub-Dix says, who lists three rules for natural energy: Get enough sleep, exercise regularly and eat well.

Bottom line: Heeding the advice of nutritionists, I’ll try to only drink these 5-Hour Energy drinks occasionally. But I really like the gentle way these drinks boost your energy and then bring you back down; I’ll definitely turn to them again when I want a little extra energy.

The stuff's doggone expensive! If it saves you from a car accident, it's worth it, though. Especially with coffee prices what they are these days. At 54, I really need a boost every now and then! But I know there's a price to be paid; I'm probably shortening my life by a day or two every time I pep myself up. I have quit smoking, though, which more than makes up for it!
I agree with J.P Gulf of Mexico. I'm 65 and work 40 hours a week as supervisor at a pharmacy (read: laborer, stocker, janitor, stockroom organizer, all physical activities) and I don't need energy drinks. I just have bread, butter and coffee in the morning, maybe oatmeal sometimes. I don't take 15 minute breaks, just take 30 minutes for a light lunch, a light supper, and am ready for the next day after a 6-hour sleep. 24 is too young to be taking energy drinks. Exercise is probably what's needed.
I tried them, they were OK but didn't do anything for me that was too amazing.  Tasted like butt.  I enjoy my coffee in the morning and wouldn't substitute this substance for that.  I may have received an energy boost for a couple of hours, but it wasn't enough to justify the cost.

Some people above made a great point - 24 years old and needing energy drinks to function?  Sounds to me like someone needs a little exercise and a look at their diet.  Many of us who are in the 45+ crowd don't require supplements to function, so what is the fascination that the current generation has with energy drinks?
This product does EXACTLY what it claims that it does.  It is not a 'mind' thing either.  It is a gradual energy boost that not only gives you more energy, but also helps with concentration.  I am a skeptic when it comes to these types of products, however one day while I was at work I was extremely tired to the point where I could hardly keep my eyes open.  I became worried about my 32 mile drive back home knowing that it was not safe for me to drive being so tired.  I decided to purchase this product and within a half hour I felt alert.  I was no longer exhausted.  It was incredible...and the best part I suffered no side-effects.  When it finally wore off I did not experience any crash of any sort.  This product taken in moderation is AWESOME!  I do not endorse products often...but this is one that I feel compelled to promote because it does what it says it does.  So to you skeptics...say what you will...but until you try it for yourself you will never know how well this product works.
Also...people must remember that this product is not for everyone and that you should take precautions before taking it.
I've tried it thrice and it didn't do a thing for me. I felt no 'rush'; I felt no 'slow buildup'; I felt no increased energy or greater stamina or higher level of alertness. Nothing at all...except, perhaps, a little chagrin at having spent a couple of bucks buying an impulse item next to the 7-11 cash register.
Mongo Lloyd...this article is listed as "Does It Work?" I just love it when people comment about the article not being news worthy but then take the time to read it and comment about it.

I work midnights and found that this is the only enrgy drink that does not give you the "crash."
look at the labels of multi-B vitamins sometime.  these usually contain levels of certain B's way in excess of the RDA recommended levels.  except biotin.  i wonder why?
I'm 47 and rarely have a problem with energy. I have to agree with jp you need to look at other things. I would like to try this drink just to see what it really does but other than that a good meal works best.
I've found that a short nap is the best energy producer I've ever used. And it is free.
More companies need to look at increasing productivity of thier employees by providing a optional 30 min nap time after lunch. You still work 8 hours a day, but you get more accomplished.
These things do not work efficiently. I would rather drink coffee, or pop/snort a stimulant such as ritalin or adderall. In all honesty, its all hype. If you need "extra" energy, go to the doctor and get a script for an amphetamine, because these are just a waste of $$$$
As a pharmacy student finishing up my internships, I decided to see which drink was the safest for use.  I really enjoyed this article, because, to my great suprise, 5-hour energy is clearly the safest of the commercially available drinks.  I do agree that XS is slightly better, and I trust the manufacturing process more, but if you don't have the foresight to order XS, 5-Hour is the safest choice at a random gas station by far.  Some energy drinks have enough B6 to cause the neurotoxicity after only slightly more than one drink!  Avoid those for sure!
keep in mind you need to have an INTACT digestive tract for this to work weel or at all. most vitamins especially the b12 need to be absorbed in a certain part of the stomach, the bottom 1/3. if you've had any kind of surgery that has altered the anatomy of your stomach (gastric bypass or stomach resection) don't waste your $.
like many I too often feel a little listless.  so I have tried them all but felt a bit odd reading the label and  seeing all these artificial concoctions.  Then, I saw one in Whole Foods, an organic energy shot from Guayaki.  a bit more expensive but everything seems to be coming from a plant.  tried that, tasted great, low calories and great smooth, relaxing energy.  loved them, now I am onto them 2-3 times a week.
i love them. i am a mom to a very active 3yr old and my husband just opened a small biz pearlywhites. so we are always busy. i keep them on my nightstand and when i wake up take one and im good to go. everything else makes my heart race and very jittery. i take 1 in the morn and 1 in the mid afternoon and if i dont have them i dont crave them. i do not think there addicting i think its just if you want the extra boost then drink 1 or 2. my husbands friend is a health nutri and he tells us everything we do is bad and when i showed him my drink he had not a bad thing to say. sure you shouldnt do any more then 2-3 a day thats just common sence people. i love them and no matter who you are some1 always needs an extra boost every now and then! i just wish i could find them whole sale cheaper some where.the cheapest ive found is a case of 24 for about $35 at bj's...
I can only drink half and then the other half an hour later to avoid the funky feeling of simluants. But it does work great on long road trips and I don't have as many potty stops as with Dr. Pepper!
I have been drinking 5-hour energy for years and find that after a 10 hour day at work it helps at the gym.  My favorite is the extra strength version. And for those of you who think this was a biased or paid review here are a couple other reviews you can check into:

I love 5 hour Energy.  I tried Red Bull once and the crash was awful and left me feeling beat up and abused. 5 hour is just the right amount of energy and I feel good when it wears off.
A staunch skeptic about this type of thing, I gave in and tried it yesterday because I am so drowsy and fatigued lately.  Absolutely zero benefit - and I really WANTED it to work so its not like my mind decided not to feel the effects.  My long-held belief is that if a there were truly a magical miracle product that would produce the results this product claims to produce, it would NOT be for sale in a little rack by the register - it would be marketed on a level with other pharmaceuticals by a big drug company or large corporation.  The big guys would be beating down the door to own the rights to market this product if it was really worth it.
I haven't had much luck with the knock off brands but if I need a little boost and don't want excessive caffeine I will try one of these.
like omg!!! i drank 24 of those in a row cuz i bought out r local store in FONDA IOWA and i crashed a few hours later but im still wired!!!! YUMM YUMM!!!!!
its a fascinating drink thats for sure.  I feel that it was created especially for party goers, since alchohol is known to decrease the ability for one to absorb b-vitamins, which is a big reason why so many people (like party goers) are turning to small shots like these and finding that they work.  (5 hour energy shots contain 2000+ DV% of b-vitamins... thats a lot of b vitamins...)
I like the 5-hour drinks for the energy boost they provide - they do work well, just as they claim in their ads.  I don't even experience a "crash" relating to energy level.  However, I find that, once the energy wears off, I begin to feel unhappy, and sometimes it triggers a depressive episode or a panic attack.
I'm 30 years old and I play goalie in several roller hockey leagues. One day I was really dragging. I didn't sleep well the night before (about 4 hours), and I had a very busy day at work. I had a game that night at 10pm. I thought "How the hell am I going to play a game tonight? Against the first place team, no less." I used to drink Sugar Free Red Bull before my late games, but I never really thought it worked that well. I saw a commercial for 5 hour energy and decided to give it a try that night, since there is a 7-11 on the way to the rink. I tried it that night and I couldn't believe how well I did. No, we didn't win the game, but we only lost 2-1 against a team that beaten us by 4 the last time we played them. I liked the results so I tried 1 before my next game as well. The results were the same: fantastic. I was physically quicker, and mentally sharper. I now take 1 before every game, and I recommend them to all my team mates and friends.
I was skeptical, but thought I'd give 5-hour energy a try to get me past the afternoon wall. It worked! Well! No sugar was a big plus, as was the no jitters and no crash. If anything, I have a little trouble sleeping. Highly recommended.
I tried it and took a 2 hour nap. Granted I was really tired, so maybe it only works for a mild pick me up.
I work in the health field, and have started seeing seizure like activity in adolescents who do not have a seizure disorder.  ? drug induced?  The only common link are these energy drinks.  Has anyone heard of this side effect with abuse of these supplements?
This stuff make me feel really sick. I hated it.
You DO NOT get the energy from the B Vitamins, nor do you get it from the taurine. The B-vitamins that are thrown in are mostly just used for marketing. The real stimulation comes from the glucuronolactone and the N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine. Look it up. It's not rocket science. I'm surprised the dietitian didn't mention that.
I have Fibromyalgia, and these boost my energy to get me well through my day. I am able to acomplish much without feeling overly tired & I can still sleep at night (I used to consume about 2 (12 cup) pots of coffee just to crawl through my day only to feel horrible and unable to sleep at night).

But, I've found that you shouldn't drink anything else that has caffeine in it durring the 5 hours after drinking it. It can cause the jitters.

Also, this little drink does not contain any of the numerous ingridients in energy drinks. I can't drink them because they make me horrible sick. However, the 5 hour Energy shot makes me feel alert, and energized without the headache & nausea of the larger "energy drinks".
Has anyone had any problems with drinking one (5 hr engery) every week day morning...I have really bad sleep apena and after one each morning for the last few weeks I am actually able to get up in the AM and never crash.
Yes, there is something wrong with you.
And how many of these comments and reviews are planted by employees of the product?
Good for a Hang over or Head ache if your like me but that's it. My family is hardly effected by energy drinks its genetic I guess. But B vitamins are the best for hang overs and I have gotten rid of a few stress head aches with them. And yes they taste terrible.
I tried 5-hour energy for a long drive and found it made me jittery and hyper rather than focused. Also my heart raced. I prefer the SpotOn Energy Patch: http://www.spotonenergy.com
I used to drink coffee but I could never concentrate and always felt jittery.  These don't make you feel "amped," they just make you feel like you got a good night's sleep.  I drink them to stop yawning and open my eyes, and they help.  I do worry about the eventual side effects, though.  This stuff's not natural.
They work... I am a skeptic by nature and questioned these, but I do feel a difference after drinking one. I figured it was worth a few $ just as a test and now I am a believer. At least you aren't laying out a ton of cash on a ThighMaster-esque product that you will never return.
Just axe Gary
Reading these comments I have to say that it's obvious that many of you were NOT paying attention in chemistry and biology....this drink may not affect you right away, but the extra vitamins (ect) WILL build up in your livers and kidneys and can kill you if at any point your body chooses.  Could be during a workout, sex or any task...or even sleep.  The point is just because the high amounts didn't hurt you today doesn't mean you should press your luck tomorrow.  Just research and don't think your buying an item will impress someone;it won't.  Chances are you'll be mad, depressed...or worse...dead.
i do not have comments, but i do have questions about the use of 5 hour energy drinks.  a friend of mine had been drinking beer, he had some pain from lifting heavy, i had given him two anicin 22 tablets, his pain went away. then someone else gave him an energy drink, is this okay?
I DRANK THE 5HOUR BERRY FLAVOUR ..WELL IT TASTED PREETY GOOD..I TOOK IT BEFORE I STARTED STUDYING FOR MY FINAL EXAMS....AND GUESSS WHAT ,,I DRANK IT AT 7PM AND WAS STILL LIVELY EVEN AFTER 4 AM!!!!
Have there been any studies done with 5-hour Energy & placebos? I wonder how many people singing the praises of 5-hour Energy would feel just as energetic after consuming a little bottle of nasty tasting Kool-Aid? I guess if people feel like it boosts their energy, it does, whether it's a placebo or "real," but I'm still curious how much of that would be imagined.
Taste like crap, didn't wake me up at all, and made me want to hurl. Great feeling when you have to deal with food. Oh, and I did crash. I'll definately take my once in a while monster that works all the time over this crap.
I just picked up a 6 pack of 5-hour Energy because I am dragging by noon each day and some days I need the extra punch just to get started.  I will go with half a bottle and see how it effects me.  At my age I have to be careful, 70 plus!  This is not a daily drink for me, but only when nothing else will help.
So what did us humans do before energy drinks like this came around ? Were we all sedentary due to not having energy ? Maybe if you're falling asleep while driving (in which case, take a rest or have someone else drive) or working serious overtime I MIGHT be able to see possibly using this. But I must say I don't see the need nor want for products like this. I'm a fairly active person and have my lazy moments but I'm never in need of an energy boost. I don't drink coffee or soda, just juice and water and I'm fine. So again, how did we ever get by without these products ?
Not Worth the money. Alright, i am a 21 year old civil servent. so the whole 8 to 5, mon-friday gig. any way i drink 5 hour energy from time to time, some times with energy drinks, other times by themselves, and some times with a light breakfast. i am tall, and a little heavier. i find the taste is rather bad for all of the 5 hour energy drinks. i get only a couple of hours of sleep a night and these things on some days will help wake me up a little bit and on other days they do nothing. however by 1pm, 5 hours later, i get the crash that 5 hour energy says it doesnt have. i feel very tired, very unfocused (hell, i am writing this right now while i should be working), fast heart beat, a twitch in my left middle finger and left eye, jittery, and a numbness in my toes and legs. however, because i have to work for another 4 or more hours, i will drink a soda, another energy drink, or coffee.... and that keeps me awake until i get home by 6ish and then i feel like crashing, but i decide to actually do stuff around the house and go to bed later. i do feel it gives me some energy, but only enough to get me awake, it doesnt help with focusing, and the crash for me is really bad, and it takes other caffinated products, and nicotine to bring me back up again.
Please people, if you are tired enough to be downing these drinks all the time there could be a much more serious sleep disorder involved.  Have your Dr. send you in for a Sleep Study and get checked out.  Excessive daytime fatigue can be caused by serious issues such as sleep apnea.  If you just want a little extra energy on the weekends like the author, that's one thing.  But if you are becomming dependant on these just to make it through the day then something else IS causing your fatigue.
Just swallowed half the bottle for the first time.... I couldn't drink anymore of the triaminic tasting stuff. I suffer with extreme fatigue from fibromyalgia and my doctor actually recommended this stuff. Weird huh? I will use it again if it works even though the taste is horrific. Maybe I can mix it with an orange soda and it will hide the taste. Anyway I have a ton of work to do today so fingers crossed.
I tried one and learned in English in 5 hours.
I like the way it makes me feel. I will take it after I go running a lot but never if I am just tired. Only after workouts. My question is what is the difference between it and the other guys? Walmart carries a generic kind, now monster and red bull have thiers. Are they just as good or worse?
Lawl sauce
