Can a whiff of grapefruit kill your sweet tooth?

What it is: Crave Relief by Bath and Body Works, $10

What it claims to do: The manufacturer says the blend of grapefruit and sweet fennel essential oils is "known to help curb cravings for sweets and stave off hunger."

My experience: To be fair, the lipstick-sized tube of essential oils was no match for the trifecta of triple-chocolate fudge cake, chocolate chip cookies and spongy white cake with gooey frosting. The week I tested Crave Relief was a particularly celebratory one in the msnbc.com newsroom, each happy occasion accompanied by a tempting dessert.

I've always had a weakness for sweets. As the daughter of a cake maker who came home from school to the cozy smell of baked goods on many afternoons, my love for goodies runs deep. Crave Relief seemed like a good candidate to bolster my willpower to resist.

Except it didn't. I suspected I was in trouble the first time I applied the citrus-scented potion to my wrists and it reminded me of the homemade lemon meringue pie my mother had brought over the night before.

Things never got much better. I found myself in a weird cycle of trying to fight the temptation of a sugary sweet by frantically snorting my wrists, a poor substitute for a bite of tiramisu or whatever it was I was trying to forget about. And then, eventually, every time I smelled Crave Relief it made me think of goodies.

Maybe I just wasn't committed enough to resisting. I don't generally indulge in sweets to excess, so when there's something really extraordinary, I let myself have a small piece. Crave Relief probably would have worked just fine if I was being wooed by a piece of hard candy or a stale Red Vine.

What the expert said: While Crave Relief didn't work for me, in theory, it could work, said Dr. Tanya Edwards, medical director for the center for integrative medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

The main active ingredients in Crave Relief are sweet fennel and grapefruit oil, and studies in rats have shown that grapefruit oil can act as an appetite suppressant. (Edwards couldn't find any research on sweet fennel acting as an appetite suppressant or helping fight a sugar craving.)

But for people who have a true sugar addiction, there's only one way out, said Edwards: Quit cold turkey.

"I treat sweet cravings the same way I treat crack cravings," she said. "Sugar and sweets affect receptors in brains very similarly to the ways that crack and morphine and addictive substances do ... You wouldn't tell a crack addict to cut down on the number of rocks per week."

Edwards said a true sugar addict is someone who can't keep from eating sugar once they start, regardless of potential detrimental outcomes.

But for those who have a more run-of-the-mill fondness for sweets, a periodic indulgence on a special occasion is fine, said Edwards. "Just don't have five special occasions a week!"

Bottom line:
Triple-chocolate fudge cake is more powerful than Crave Relief.

DANG....I'm doomed.  I work right above a bakery
I tried this stuff and threw it out because it was so useless. Not only did it not work, but it smelled terrible and I couldn't stand to have in on my wrists any longer...
mk Hardy is doomed!  He works right above a bakery.
Maybe the smell of grapefruit just turns rats tomachs...ever think of that manufacturer?...just like the smell of rats turns mine.
i tried this but it dont work.the day i did this after i ate chocolate cake.
Why not just eat a grapefruit sprinkled with a litle sugar; it works for me.
The advice about quitting cold turkey is right on! And beware--sugar is in EVERYTHING! I stay away from most processed & restaurant foods, period. There is barely a food that the food industry does not throw sugar into. It's ridiculous. Dressings, sauces, pasta, bread, meat, veggies, drinks, etc. Save yourself huge weight gain & lethargy problems & cook for yourself. It's really not that hard & once you get the addictive junk out of your food, you won't need to eat nearly as much.
This is superb!

Many thanks for making the connection between sugar cravings and crack cravings.  Many people face this problem and don't know how common it is. They eat sweets, go berserk and can't stop eating more sweets until they make themselves sick.  No amount of will power stops it.

Cold turkey is the only answer.

We'll add this to the http://HappinessHabit.com health site http://Healthy-Happiness.com

This article was informative as well as hysterically funny.  It's rare that I sit at my computer cracking up, but I was!  A great read, thanks.  And I agree with you Morgan S.  Cold turkey, yeah...Some things are hard to do in moderation!  I try to drink water whenever I want sweets.  If that doesn't work, a nice juicy apple, or 1 big gooey date. : )
I managed to stop drinking and smoking cold turkey. However, my cravings for sweets is very hard. Cold turkey is the only way to stop anything. You cannot have just one m&m!
Here's a simple reality check - people are not rats, despite the similarities in some subsystems.
A dill pickle works for me when I'm into a sugar/sweet eating cycle.  Eating a dill pickle seems to stop wahtever perpetuates the wanting of more and more sugar.  Hardest part is remembering to eat the pickle!
Take a look at Inhale-Away from Inhalex. These guys seem to have figured out how to keep the smell off your body and up your nose.
lulz i wonder how it works on kids? XD im 12, im doing a weekly assignment on this. interesting, but i dont think itll work considering my overfondness for cookies D:
LOL at the rat one... I bet that would be effective, make it smell like rats!
ths is a good article! i have to do an assignment on a current event every week, im doing this one right now :D but i really need to be careful. i just drank 2 chocolate milks ):
From a fitness point of view here is what I learned from a few different celebrity trainers I've worked with here in Hollywood where narcissism is almost a religion. And this applies ONLY to people who have no serious medical issues. When trying to loose weight, and in doing so you work out regularly (meaning 3-4 times per week. As long as you get your hear rate up for extended periods of time, and count your calories (use calorie king dot com)you SHOULD have a 'cheat day' once per week. 'Cheat day' means I can eat anything I want as much as I want - just for that day! The rest of the week I follow a strict diet making sure I eat healthy foods, and keeping my daily caloric intake in the fat burning range based on my height weight and age. What happens when you follow a diet like this, your body will adapt to what you re eating. Which means soon your body will get use to eating good and stop burning as much fat. But when you 'shock' your system once a week with all your guilty pleasures your body is forced to readjust/adapt to what you consumed. So by the next day it is ready to readjust which helps keep your metabolism active. Now I'm not a doctor, just a 40 yr old who since January of this year (motivated by break up) lost 17lbs of fat and am now at 8% body fat. I used this plan to reach my goal. And I have to say, there is also a mental component to it. Being that after my cheat day where I'll consume anywhere from 2500 - 4000 calories keeping in mind that during the rest of the week I'm down to 1200 max - I can go till Thursday before I even want or think about sweets or bad food cause I satisfied myself on Saturday - which is my cheat day. Last thing I will say is that alcohol is your enemy except for cheat day. ESPECIALLY BEER - yes LIGHT BEER TOO. So check with you Dr before you try anything crazy, and good luck with your weight loss goals. But my last point is this: You will never truly get in shape without some sort of SERIOUS work out routine. And I don't mean going to the gym and working out like your mom told you to clean your room. I mean seriously working out to achieve a goal. We'll cal this posting: Food for Thought! LOL
