I have fair skin that is somewhat sensitive, but it's nothing that an over the counter lotion can't solve. When I used the product, I started light and worked my way up until the hair was gone. Well, along with the hair it took several layers of skin and it took at least a week to recover from the self-inflicted "tramatic irritation" (as warned by the doctor in the article). Unless you have thick, hardy skin and light hair, I'd stay far away from this product!

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I was seconds away from purchasing this product when I decided to be smart about it and learn from other people's experiences. I'm so glad I did. Most of the reviews I read, which totalled somewhere around 120, said exactly what this article is stating. It's basically sandpaper, and just doesn't do the job. Various people reported that their skin scabbed after using it (eww!), and couldn't believe that anyone had had a positive experience with it. People were even questioning if perhaps the Smooth Away folks had planted their employees on the message boards to write good reviews because it just wasn't possible to have a good experience with this product. I can't say if that's the case, and it's likely that it does work for some people, but the vast majority were horrified by the results. Glad I looked before I leapt, to be sure.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I LOVE Smooth Away. I am always skeptical of as seen on TV products and didn't have much hope for this when I received it as a gift. I'm a mom of 2 and rarely able to take a long enough shower to shave my legs. It really does the trick! Although I wouldn't use it for my full legs (I tried, it took FOREVER) I would use it for quick touch ups, if I happened to miss a spot. It's also useful to get rid of stubble inbetween shaves. If you have very sensitive skin like the author seems to have, I wouldn't use it though, because it is a bit abrasive.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I have been using Smooth Away for about a month now and love it. I'll admit, I'm not an overly hairy woman (not a lot of hair or is it very thick). But it works fine for me.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

My teenage daughter and I both tried Smooth Away, with unsatisfactory results. As another hairy chick, with thick hair shafts, I understand the frustration. Shaving too close in the bikini area causes bumps--whether its wax, razors or depilitory creams. The thick hair shaft seems to have problems breaking through the skin when it grows back. Creams make me nervous because I don't understand how this isn't toxic like PPD dyes for your skin, as in what are you absorbing? I bought something like Smooth away from Sallys a long time ago--like 10 years ago, and not only did it not make a significant difference in hair removal, but like others, I was left with red, itchy strips and patches on my skin where I tried it. I also have dry skin so I noticed that Exfoliation didnt really happen either, except where the skin was irritated. It was a waste of money for me.
I can see why it might work on kid's skin or on people who have very thin hair shafts {fine body hair} but even then I am sure the results are mixed. Honestly if you have very light or blond hair, on other parts of your body, you can use an electric razor to shave, and you don't have to shave it smooth. If it's sufficiently light, no one will see it anyway if its very short. That gets rid of your razor bumps, and depilatory smells and rashes, its cheap and painless too.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I'm 30 years old woman and I'm using the sugar waxing since I was 13, it's a traditional waxing way used by middle eastern women, it's true that this method is painful but with time you become used to it and you'll love it because it lets your skin smouth as silk for more than 3 weeks

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I've heard that during WWII women used pumice stones to rub the hair off their legs, as the steel in the blades were needed for the war effort. And I heard it didn't work for most women and was as bad on your skin as using sand paper. Last year I bought a "Tweeze" that you also see advertised on tv. I bought mine at Walmart for about $10.00. It works well on my facial hair, except for those "witches whiskers" on my chin. It doesn't do anything for the hair on my legs. If you buy one don't over-do using it on your face as it can irritate the skin if you press too hard and/or use it for too long. Also get a stash of batteries as they do run down pretty quickly. Basically it grabs tiny tuffs of hair, twists it and pulls it out by the roots, but it's not sharp like a razor. I frequently use a hair remover on my chin hairs, but I don't leave it on very long, just 2 or 3 minutes. It doesn't remove the hair, but it does seem to make it easier to remove them with a good pair of tweezors. Guess it loosens them.

I wonder if there is something in production of Smooth Away that makes it safer on your skin than it's identical sand paper. Would be interesting to find out.

Char

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I too troed something loke this about 10 years ago. I do have very fine body hair (one advantage to my Scadinavian heritage) and I wound up w/ raw rashes on my legs after only using it for a few minutes. It was the middle of summer so my legs weren't winter-dry. It took weeks for my skin to heal and wow! was it painful! I did discover one very excellent use for the product, tho regular fine grit sand paper is WAY cheaper. That nasty skin on the back edge of your heels!! Works better than pumice stones and it way cheap compared to most foot files. And if it's thicker than most or callused (like mine) and your very careful, and you happen to have one lying around, a small orbital sander with almost no pressure is quick and easy!

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

It works just fine, but it takes a while and it can irritate your skin.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

That comment about it being sand paper is right. My experience was Velevet Touch product exactly like this one. Then they didn't sell it anymore and I thought you know it is exactly like sandpaper. You got to use the plumbing type though. A 600 grit just like the other e-mailer said is perfect. I agree the products like Velvet touch and Smooth Away and others before it are all lousy. They don't work for the legs but if you rub the sandpaper on itself a few times before you use it, it gets rid of some of the abrassive stuff and I find then you can use it. You also have to put slight pressure on it not alot or you'll burn yourself and either have a bout of dry skin that you have to use the paper again to remove or you will have a burn.
So rub it on itself before using a new paper and remember, light pressure until the hair is gone. Pay attention to how your skin feels too.
I only use it on upper lip and chin and then use a for sensitive skin astringent that cools it down or tea tree cream. I use it every about 3 days after a shower too for best results. I find when the pores are open and the hair is soft from a shower is the best time to use the 600 grit sand paper from plumbing section paper at the hardware store. It's only a dollar something a sheet and I cut it into strips and it last at least a year or more.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

As a happily hairy man, I have no use for this product. While my inexperience using this product at first caused irritation, I found it worked awesome for my "fuzzy bear" syndrome. I used it on Saturday, and it took a while-but I think that was because my hair was too long. After reading all the reviews, I gave it another go, as my hair grows pretty fast. Just used it on the lower half of my left leg while at my desk, and it worked. I am surprised I don't have a reaction to it, as I have sensitive skin. My skin feels smooth, there's no hair left, and no redness. It's certainly not the fastest thing, but it does work better than my electric razor. It sucks if you have a reaction to it, but it really isn't the worst thing I have ever used from hair removal. If you didn't like it-oh well, it wasn't that expensive. (And, the local affiliate to ABC has a thing called "Test it Tuesday"-they tested it, and it worked for the people there. Perhaps some people are using it wrong.)

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Conair makes an electric version of this for about $20, called Hair Remover System or something like that. My daughter bought it, and I love it - sometimes. Faster and more effective then the manual Smooth Away reviewed here, but pretty much the same principal and with the same drawbacks. I use it once a week and then usually shave once a week. It has reduced how often I have to shave and is easy when you don't have time to do the whole shower thing. Once you get good at it, it only takes about 10 minutes to do both legs, hip to ankle. I would never have bought it, and would never use it on my face (ouch) but for people with the right skin type, sanding the hair off actually does work. Honestly, I like it more for the exfoliation then the hair removal. I would imagine the Smooth Away would be less effective since it is manual and would indeed take a lot longer.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I've tried something similar that I got at Walmart and it works but it's really painful and I look like I have razor burn from all the rubbing! So paying for $150 to laser remove a mustache isnt that expensive comparedto having it waxed off 15 times for the same amount of cash.
Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Fortunately I found this product at WalMart for less than the retail price. Unfortunately it didn't work at all. Don't waste your hard-earned money!

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I was pretty skeptical myself so my mom and i opend up a pack and after realizing that it was fine grit sandpaper my mom said (and i quote) "well, we just bought some for the shelf! just use that!" =] its worthless. thank you for trying it out for the rest of us!

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

This did not work. I am a senior and body hair becomes fine and less as you get older. This did not even work on the fine and scarce hair on my arms or legs. It was indeed a rip-off.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I am Irish and Native American, and so I have very little body hair, and what I do have is very fine and short. I, personally, have not seen it up close but according to all the remarks about it being sandpaper my guess is, IT IS!!! Sandpaper IS made of "crystals", "glued" onto paper --- hence the name. The reddish-brown sandpaper most people are familiar with is made of paper and tiny garnet crystals. It's the industry's way of using what would otherwise be wasted product. I hope this clears up the mystery of the 'sandpaper as hair removal' "scam"(?)!
Oh, by the way --- for the woman who slathered on "PETROLEUM jelly" on your freshly, sandpapered, irritated skin -- I hope you eat well(lots of raw, organic foods) and drink plenty of fresh, clean water every day to help reduce your risk of developing certain health issues in the future; petroleum is a known carcinogen! NEVER, EVER use it(including: mineral oil -- aka: "baby oil") on ANY body part -- lips included(ingestion is inevitable).
LADIES, check the ingredients in your skin care products!!!!

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I tried this product [under a different name] in the 1970's, my mom bought them. Shaving doesn't work for me at all, but its at least an acceptable process. Instead of buying Smooth Away, I used my husband's sandpaper (the 600 the author mentions). It worked ok, but for coarse leg hair, I still had some stubble. My legs are irritated somewhat, but if it worked, I'd get over. Me legs look the worst, red spots all over them, no matter how much I lotion and exfoliate and it's not going away - 3 months after my last treatment. Please do not listen to the "sales-y" staff that it is painless and quick and cheap. If you still decide to do it, just heed my warnings. Ask them to turn your voltage down, you don't have to be subjected to that much pain.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I used smooth away on my left leg and it works because not only did it remove my leg hair it removed the top layer of skin which whould have been fine if I hadn't used nair right after. I have a terrible chemical burn now. Laser hair removal is not cheap, and it can be VERY painful. I went through one cycle of laser hair removal, then about 7 years later, had to go through it again because the hair was coming back in. (under my chin, above my upper lip, and along the sides of my face) I seen the same technician twice, and he informed me he was going back to school and would be replaced. The nurse that replaced him burnt my face so bad, I blistered and peeled within hours. I kept telling her that it hurt more than usual, and she told me she had it at the same setting as before. Needless to say, I didn't go back again. I'll use Smpoth Away any day. I've found that it's the best product for me to use. And a lot cheaper than laser. Especially since it's going to grow back anyway. And for the record, I've also done the electrolosis. Nothing removes hair forever. If it doesn't grow back, you end up producing more hair folicles. You can't win.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

THANK YOU LADIES AND GENTS for letting others know what a WASTE of time and money that Smooth Away Really is!!! and i totally agree WHY would anyone want to use SANDPAPER to remove hair on your body come on....
I must say i did want to buy it until my hubby say hack NO and told me it was sandpaper i thought he was just pulling my leg until he showed me this....THX AGAIN

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

K. It is basically equivalent to sanding your hair and your skin away. I have used it twice and so far i find i would not invest in it again. I have baby fine hair and it does remove it with a lot of buffing but it takes the color off of any tan you might have and basically exfoliates. But the kicker is the hair starts to grow back within two days. Not what i am looking for. Also they charge you almost as much for the shipping if you order more than one as the product itself. 39.97-product--37.94 shipping. I called UPS and the most for wt is less than 10.00. They are making up for selling so cheap with their shipping. But remember they also ship in bulk so it will be cheaper than that. It's a consumer rip off at the least. I figured..why not? I tried it on a small part of my arm and it totally worked! So i did both arms! That was day befre yesterday and they are still smooth. Today I used it on my legs. the white dust was there, but when I was done I lotioned up and my skin was smooth! I totally thought it would be a scam. not. I told my friend Amy about it because we are both in our 30's...and foxy..but we have ..well..beard stuble. She said she bought some glove like this in europe a long time ago, but couldn't get it here in the states. She thinks it must be similar.

anyway...that's my story.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Thanx for the review, I was going to get this for my mom for Mother's Day, but now I'll find something that actually works ^..^

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

My wife tried this product when she was just a pup ,and when I mentioned it to her she handed me her left-over sandpaper stickers. I wanted to use it on my face to try to eleminate some of the razor bumps and ingrown hairs. So I tried while driving (I was bored). After a few minutes my cheek felt like it was little smoother but that was just the "sawdust" err... exfoliated skin. So I stopped. A few moment after that, my face started to burn. My aftershave lotion helped but it was still irritated. I guess I'll stick to my electric razor and use the Smooth Away on the bird house that I'm building.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

It worked really well for me. It left my skin really smooth. Thank God I did not buy the battery operated version that was even more expensive. I wanted to use the "magic" product especially for my bikini area and it did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING there. I tried it on my upper lip and I think it removed a little, tiny bit of hair, but the area is extremely sensitive now, it was burning right after using it. I kept rubbing and rubbing for a long time. I wanted to bit my husband who always warns me: "if it looks too good to be true, probably it isn't"!. I bought it and I was totally disappointed. If you have two hours to spend in the bathroom every time you have to shave your legs well than this is for you, but I don't have that much time to spend each and every morning in the bathroom doing this. If I had a sample of the product before I had purchased it I would not of paid this amount of money for it. Yes I agree with the other people about the fact that it is some sort of sandpaper for the skin. Thumbs down for this product. I will stick to the razor for now.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I saw this product on TV and thought, "wow, that's exactly what I need!" I did not want to pay for shipping so when I saw it at my local CVS, I bought it. Never picked it back up UNTIL I went to get my eyebrows waxed and the lady said did she want me for her to do my mustach? WHAT THE HECK I did NOT have a mustach so I went home and saw small hairs. Opened my drawer and right next to my razors was the SMOOTH AWAY with the lady on the box doing her mouth. So I did it. FIRST my skin turns VERY RED (I'm black) and my face was on FIRE. When I went to work later that day and was eating cherries some lady said they MUST be good because it is all over my mouth :0|. NO it was the SMOOTH AWAY RESULTS...the next day I woke up and I have burn marks where the irritation is. THIS IS HORRIBLE and I had plans for the weekend. I think I will use it for this purpose solely, but only every few weeks or so, since I am concerned about the abrasive nature of it, even though it didn't cause much pain.

When tried on the legs or armpits it was useless or...soooooooo slow that it SEEMED useless. I will not be using it for those areas in the future.

I do find this product equal or somewhat better (assuming that I don't develop a skin condition because of it) than my primary method of upper lip removal which is waxing. Shaving sucks, especially when you have bad genes and have to do it EVERYDAY to maintain smoothness. Even then, I still get irritation, so it's a lose-lose situation. But my advice for women who have problems with facial hair, try Sally Hansen's Brush-On Hair Removal. It works very well on my upper lip. You brush it on, leave it on for about 8-10 minutes, wipe it off with a rag, and wash it off with some normal, non-scented soap. It stinks until you use soap to wash it off. There might be a couple stragglers, but just pluck those babies out (they come out very easily after that stuff's been on them for a while), and voila. Nice, smooth upper lip. I'm glad i didn't get it because it doesn't work and you can't return things if they've been used. so I'm really glad i didn't waste my MOTHER'S hard earned money, haha. and since it doesn't work on thick hair then i would have really wasted money cause i was going to use it on my lower area which i hate plucking. and if laser hair is effective on light skin and dark hair on oriental people like me then i guess i will give it a try, but definately not now. I really don't know why i was thinking about buying that. I just remembered that the only reason people advertise their products on commericals is to try and get people to buy it because nobody DOES buy it. wow..

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I used smooth away for my lip area and now I have major rashes and scabs on my face.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I actually just got this, and managed to do both of my legs in under 20 minutes. I had shaved this morning, and shaving rarely, if ever, gets rid of all the hair on my legs, and I usually have skin irritation from it. The Smooth Away pads actually felt great on my legs, and the stubble is completely gone, and literally, I can't remember the last time my legs were this smooth. I know that what works for hair removal for one person doesn't necessarily work for another, and some of us have to shave far more often than others. If I want smooth legs from shaving, I'd have to shave twice a day! If this product allows me to go a day without shaving, it's worth it as far as I'm concerned.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Well it worked fine for me but a razor does work better, my skin was also very soft afterwards.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Omg! If it really is "Europes best selling women's product" then they must have wood for skin because it's basically just sanding your skin. Just like Anna Chan, I am fairly hairy and have always been embarrassed by it. I cannot use non electric razors as they cause a rash, nair and similar products cause skin irritation, I have a almost non-existent threshold for pain so waxing is not an option. Shaving with an electric razor eventually gets the hair, but the next day it is all stubbly again. I was really hoping this would work. I have always wanted electrolysis or laser treatments, but that would be horribly costly to get my legs completely done (especially the area considered to be the bikini zone), and I do not have that kind of money. Perhaps someday. Thank you for alerting us to this useless product.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Just remember, not EVERY product out there works for EVERYBODY! I beleive that you have to have the right kind of skin for it. Five different people in our house, with five different hair types tried it, and their was essentially no hair removed. A few short strands got knotted, but were not pulled out or cut down. We attempted to go on the product website (note that we could not find an address on the product box or insert) and had to shut down our computer to get away from the "wait, you qualify for a special offer" that kept reappearing when we tried to exit the site. We also couldn't find a link on the website for "contact us." That's telling in and of itself. From the five opinions in this household: Save your money--this product does not work!

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I love Smooth Away. Bought it at my local Zellers for $14.999 yesterday. Have tried it on my upper lip and underarms. Had no irritation and I do have sensitive skin. Applied the milk soaked cotton balls to lip right afterwards, just in case and then face cream. I'd read about it beforehand - some people saying positive things, others negative. Using the Smooth Away pads on my arms and legs worked very well once I figured out which movements with the pads ACTUALLY made the hair come off (It's not the circular motions in the instructions and it requires a bit of pressure). I had zero skin irritation and the hair still hasn't grown back after 2 days, which is better than shaving for me. When using the smaller pad on facial hair, however, I did experience a bit of irritation and redness, but no more than I would have had from waxing, anyway. A little moisturizer cleared that right up. I think it depends on your skin type and sensitivity. I have pretty hardy skin, and it hasn't really done any damage to me at all and it's working like a charm. My only complaint is that the pads go dull rather quickly. I didn't find that it took very much longer than shaving, either, and using Smooth Away was something I could do sitting on the couch watching TV. A definite win in my book. I think it may have something to do with the texture of your body hair, too, whether it works or not. I had a few stubborn, thicker hairs that had to be plucked afterward, but we're talking about individual hairs, not large patches. And my skin is very soft and smooth after using, too. Just like advertised.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

It's awsome first I thought it was a sales gimik then I tried it and it's my new best friend my skin is soooo soft and the hair is gone in minutes

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I am not really sure what to believe anymore! I thought that it worked...somewhat. It works best on skin that is very firm, I found. I am 16 years old, so age may have a difference too. I thought it worked well for my legs, although it took me nearly two hours to do them. I also tried to do my upper lip, which was successful but turned bright red. It also burned badly when I put moisterizer on it. On my arms it had no effect, but my best friend was very pleased. I think it mostly just depends on your hair. Mine isn't very thick, so that could be why I had success too.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

I used Smooth away on embarassing upper lip hair that wasn't too noticeable but I thought it would be worth a try based on the claims. Personally, it works alright, but isn't as fast as a razor. I'll use it to keep things from coming back rather than getting rid of them in the first place, and for those hard-to-reach areas. We'll see how often it needs to be done though. I suspect more often then they claim. It takes a while the first time you use it and there is a learning curve with this product. You need to learn just how much pressure to apply in order to remove you hair efficiently without causing abrasions. I feel it left my legs and arms quite smooth, soft and yes, hair-free. Hours later, they still feel wonderful. I used their lotion afterwards. The biggest trick is to make sure your skin is completely clean and dry. Most soaps have moisurizer, perfumes and other residues in them. Try using a soap such as Lever or Basis and dry your skin completely with a towel that has not been dried with fabric softener. Don't wait hours after your shower to do it either as the skin will produce its own replacement oils after you wash and that'll produce a bad result with this product. You really have to do it just as instructed in order to have good result.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

Hi. - As a daughter of a past hair dresser, I would like to point out you *SHOULD NOT, NOT EVER, NEVER EVER*, **SHAVE** your face or your arms. If you leave your arms & face alone, hair will turn blonde. This works for legs also, but people rarely allow it. When you shave your arms & face, the hair will turn a brunette (for anyone other than pure blonde) and will never go blonde. If you don't shave your legs for long enough, you'll see that some of the hairs are blonde, starting to go blonde, or blonde tipped. For all of you that HAVE shaved your arms or face, too late! It is not okay to shave or wax either of these areas.

Smooth Away yields some hairy results

As a man who loves natural beauty, it's great to hear how many women are naturally very hairy.
