Here is my experience...If you use the white powders, you can SEE when you have them properly brushed out, if hair seems dull, a light spritz with rosewater cures that...for longer lasting results, use less of your regular products to style your hair in the first place and brush them all out before dry shampooing, use the minimum of the dry shampoo product that produces results, style, and then just use a light mist of finishing hold spray every day to set your style, that way the product buildup won't be bad. For the environmental, you should be using a barrier/sunscreen conditioner/aftertreatment anyway but go light on it, keeping it off roots and scalp for maximum lift and rinse well..I think there are also finishing sprays with UV/pollution barriers as well. :)

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

No. The CFCs have been taken out of aerosol sprays. I was assured by TIGI that after a recall they had fixed it, but my second bottle did the same exact thing. So, although it worked like a charm, it was a huge waste of money. I did a little research and found this stuff called Pssst! Dry Shampoo at my local drug store, and it works just as well and cost all of $6.49. I have red highlights in my hair and am trying to preserve them as much as possible so that I don't have to spend a ton of money upkeeping the dye job, so the less often I wash my hair, the longer the color will stay in, not to mention I have curly hair and straighten it daily, so using the dry shampoo actually saves me time and does less damage to my hair. I discovered this stuff when my mom was in ICU and I later found that my local drug store carries it (about $6.00). Just place the shower cap on your head and massage the cap. After a few minutes, remove the cap and your hair is clean, wet, and nice smelling -- apparently chemically cleaned! This is great if you're restricted from the shower for some reason (broken foot in a cast for instance, bedridden with illness, etc.)

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

A tip to speed up drying time for thick hair: Divide your hair into 2 sections (top/bottom), using a clip to keep the upper section on top of your head, then dry the bottom section first. Then separate the remaining wet section again and repeat until each section is dry. Since I color my hair red, the color washes out so easily that I don't wash my hair everyday. Half the time I don't feel like I need a conditioner, the natural oils in my hair have done their job. I started using powder after asking an older co-worker what women used to do before daily hair washings became fashionable. It works great. If anyone finds the aerosols too expensive, just try makeup powder for different skin tones.

Before I learned about this, I could never, ever go a day without washing and styling. My hair is so oily that in less than 24 hours, it looks like I haven't washed in a week. The powder does feel weird... and kind of dirty... but it's really saved me on those days when I don't have a lot of time to get ready. Your frequent washing causes your hair to become oilier faster - if you'd space out shampooing a little bit, you'd find your hair doesn't get oily as fast.

If your hair is naturally wavy, trying to force it to be something else is ridiculous and time consuming. You could read most of a book or bake a cake in the time you're spending forcing your hair to be something that it isn't.

Written by someone with truly difficult hair - wavy, thick, Asian in texture, flyaway in nature. It gets washed twice a week with liquid castille shampoo, is conditioned with coconut or olive oil and gets me tons of compliments, because it is long, shiny, full of body and wave and is long, down to my waist. Throw away your blow dryer, stop making your hair more oily by scrubbing it all the time with detergents (that's what shampoo is, look it up) and frying your scalp with heat (makes you sweat and your tortured oil glands produce even more oil to try to salve the damage)and give your hair a chance to be its natural self.

Think of all the things you could do with that forty minutes a day without putting brown baby powder in your hair to get on your hands and everything else? And you're spending over forty bucks for what is essentially dyed baby powder in an aerosol can (great for the environment, you go girl!)? Think of what you could do with that money! People are losing their jobs all over America and you're blowing forty bucks for colored baby powder in a can?

Why anyone with wavy hair would insist on blow drying it straight is beyond me. Women have spend centuries trying to get their hair to curl, and you're wasting forty minutes of your life every day to force your naturally wavy hair to be straight, limp, flat, dull and lifeless - or you're spraying brown powder into it? Geez. The madness never ends.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Oscar Blandi makes one that's not bad. And there is absolutely no actual reason to wash your hair every day.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

In the 70's it was "Pssst", I don't remeber who made it. I used when I was in the hospital for a week...it worked but built up and looked like white baby powder...

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

I love Bumble and Bumble's hair powder. I use it once a week to save water, electricity, and time. However, as stated in the aritcle you can not touch your hair (which you shouldn't anyway, because it just makes it more oily) and you can not rest your sunglasses on top of your head. Sans, dark black (which ever color you use) streaks on your face. Yes, you could get a short hair cut but, this sometimes is not a good choice depending on the shape of your face.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

when i was in junior high the stuff was called...p s s s s s s t. i still remember the jingle which is why i recall the exact number of the s's. i did leave you looking like you had dandruff and i had almost white hair!

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

I am 73 and have hair which has a mind of it 's own. I keep it short and do not wash it every day.
When I was little I had a pair of mittens whose backs were made out of white rabbit fur. To clean these we used corn meal what cleaned it beautifully. Then I spray at the roots between the front section and the crown (the whole way across my head) and between the crown and the back/bottom section (again, the whole way across my head). I brush through, flip my head upside-down, blow-dry for thirty seconds to a minute, then quickly re-style. My hair looks just-washed, and this saves me a great deal of time. You just wash the rest of your body, and I am astounded that some of you haven't figured out that it is possible. So, true, maybe your hair gets wet, it still isn't the same amount of water in there as if you had washed it.
Some hair types dry out and frizz if they're washed every single day, and colour washes out of dyed hair.
Also the reason aerosols were bad is that they contained CFCs(thats chlorofluorohydrocarbons, which is kind of fun to say), which are highly reactive with ozone. Fortunately CFCs have been phased out.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

To be honest, any haircut shorter than my shoulders does not suit my face shape. Right now, my hair is halfway down my back, and it takes around 45 minutes to shower, shampoo, condition, apply smoothing creme, and blowdry in sections with a ceramic brush (get one! it really speeds things up because it helps spread heat). I end up washing probably every 2-3 days--not because I'm lazy, but because I always have homework or something to study. (Yeah, you try washing hair daily when you have physics 2, calculus 3, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry homework to do.)

Yes, my hair is naturally wavy when I let it dry, but it's not a pretty wavy. It is more excess volume than wave, and the bottom layer of my hair is downright frizzy. So, I like to use the blow dryer and the brush and my hair is still amazingly shiny--and that's even with my naturally blonde hair. (Do you know how hard it is for blondes to get a sheen on their hair? It is tons easier for brown and black hair to reflect light.)

P.S. If you're blonde and in a pinch, face powder and a large powder brush will work sufficiently.

P.P.S. My great grandmother was in a nursing home for quiet some time and this was a great way to freshen her up between her weekly visits to the in house beauty shop. Personally, I used to wash & dry my hair every day for years and years. It was always such a pain. Now that I am getting close to 50 and need to (well I guess I don't NEED to, but want to) color & hi-light my hair, I always get sticker shock at the salon. My stylist suggests washing hair in cooler water, using small amounts of shampoo and a very light conditioner to stretch the life of the color, but also to avoid damaging the hair in general. Daily washing, drying, flat ironing and application of products dries out the hair and will make it damaged. Unless you have been sweating your brains out, or have a scalp condition, or very fine/thin hair you should be able to shampoo every other day and be quite hygienic. For those with the above mentioned probs. that may require daily washing, the system of light shampoo and conditioning are also good ideas. Happy Hair everyone!
PS...forty dollars a can???!!!!!!

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

I have extremely fine, thin hair that I have to wash every morning - even if I washed it the night before - because it will be oily and pressed against my head that next morning. I've tried the dry shampoo spray and it really does absorb the oil and provide lift. But it takes away the shine, so needed to use a shine spray. The only problem I have, is that since I get an oily scalp, I would tend to break-out around the hairline on those days I didn't wash it, even though I still took a shower. I haven't decided if it's worth it or not.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Frankly, I'm tired of advertisers and manufacturers brainwashing everyone into believing they MUST have the unnatural, chemical laden products they sell while they are making a ton of money doing it. I loved the article, and I recently made my own lotion with shea butter and shared it with my friends who LOVE it. All that does is strip your hair of its natural oils and make it dry. And...if you color you hair it fades much quicker by washing it everyday. I wash my hair every other day or every 2 days and I can assure you, no one can smell it 6ft away and it does not have a stench. By the way, just because you dont wash your hair everyday doesn't mean you cant shower everyday.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Oatmeal! Rolled oatmeal is just as effective and a great trick for long term camping! The oats absorb the oils, and because it's not a powder they just shake right out of your hair. Plus while camping oatmeal isn't going to harm the environment.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

i used this type of dry shampoo when i was a teenager and it cost about 2 dollars for a huge spray bottle ,it worked to fluff it up some but hair still felt dirty to me.would never pay 42 dollars a bottle for it thats highway robbery

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

i ♥ dry shampoo!! it is the best thing i never knew about. i do NOT use the aerosol stuff; it's gunky and runs out too quickly for the price. Fluff a little (about 1 teaspoon- that's right) powder on the the roots of the hair - not the scalp, not the ends! Try not to get it in your part. Spread it around your head (top and back, sides will take care of themseves when brushing)using your palm, then fluff it through the hair, just a bit, using your fingers. Brush vigorously with a "real" brush: that means clumps of tiny bistles - natural or nylon - but not those individual plastic spikes like a styling brush. If you brush moderately hard it WILL come out; it will NOT be white and flakey, it will NOT look like danruff. If you got powder into your part, or if your hair is so thin the powder gets down to the scalp you will need more brushing, directly over the part (part again after finishing) but it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes tops! More likely 2 to 3 minutes.

To the ladies who say "yuck! Why not just wash?" I say you need to learn to be more conscious consumers. Nobody washed their hair every day (aside from Mary Martin, performing in "South Pacific") prior to the 1970s when Johnson's began advertizing their "baby" shampoo as "gentle enough to use every day!" Just a way to push more product, folks, just a way to push more product.

So grow up and get with the program! It not only saves time, but water (and the ecology) and results in nicer hair A shampoo lasts me about 3 days (this varies by person). A "dry wash" not only extends the time between washings but lasts longer (four of more days) and make my thin hair appear thicker, with more volumn at that scalp. If grease is not allowed to build up, the hair won't smell.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Yeah, we could all cut our hair and look like Ellen but that style doesn't work for everyone. For those of us who value femininity and attractiveness but want to be smart and save time, Rene Futerer is an excellent dry shampoo and great to use between color appointments at the salon. I use it a couple of times a week when I don't have much time to get ready for work with 2 kids and all. Generally, I wash my hair about 4 days a week. It's a great shortcut, without sacrificing your looks.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

LOL @ Ian.... dude, where are you dating, cuz everywhere I've been women *love* long hair on men.

But I hear time and again poor girls having to hear some guy say "you'd be sexy with long hair" when they have it short.

SHORT IS SEXY TOO LADIES SOME GUYS DO LIKE IT.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Also- get better towels too, I have really long hair (waist length) and have always air dried unless in a hurry to have it dry. Baby Powder works good..

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

It's actually really good for your hair to not wash it every day. Read the ingredients on your bottle of shampoo. Understand a lot of them? Those are the ones that strip your hair and most are very harsh, even if the shampoo is supposedly mild. My husband recognizes the chemical names because he uses them when he works on helicopters. One he recognized was even banned from being used due to it's toxicity (much stronger forms for helicopters, but still not good in general). Also if you ask your stylist most, if not all, will tell you to wash your hair every other day at most. Unless you're running marathons, or the equiv, your hair will not smell bad or even look bad.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

all these people that think its gross, talk to your dermatologist! they will tell you that you are killing your hair by wahing it every day. as long as you don't roll in dirt or drown in sweat,or smoke, which is gross on its own, your hair isn't getting dirty! and as your body gets used to the less washings, your hair will be less oily. it gets oily because your body is trying to replace the natural oil stripped by shampoos! look it up people!

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

To Megan, Michelle and Hannah who advised that we not be so lazy as to not wash our hair everyday, as it only takes a few minutes. Get real. If you are fortunate enough to not have to do anything after a 2 minute wash, lucky you! But the majority of us that were not born with effortless hair: conditioning, styling, drying, curling or straightening is a must. That takes alot longer than a few minutes. An occasional short cut is a blessing not to mention better for the environment.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Calm down, Kali (and others who are being rude for no reason). It's not laziness to not want to wash your hair if you don't need to. And people with thick, coarse hair shouldn't wash their hair everyday, it's drying and damaging to strip the elements all the time. I wash my hair every other day, but that doesn't mean I don't shower every morning. Stop trying to cut people down just because you think your opinion is law.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

i used to wash my hair every other day . . . i got so many compliments all the time and it absolutely didn't look oily or smell or anything. i have (naturally OILY) shoulder length thick brown hair. I shampooed every other day for many years. Then I started doing it every day for whatever reason . . . and found that I couldn't stop. My hair adjusted to the daily shampooing by getting oily after 24 hours! Right now I'm on a break from school and I'm only letting myself wash it every other day. After a month or two, my hair will be back to "normal"

Washing your hair every other day isn't gross at all. Your hair really does adjust. Try it. There is a period where your hair looks oilier, but you should see improvement within a week or two . . .

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

I have very fine color-processed hair and had always washed it everyday which made it very dry, frizzy and thin. Over the last couple of months, I started skipping a day by using simple baking soda between washings. I would first take my morning shower with my hair pinned up in a shower cap. Then I would sprinkle on baking soda (particularly into the roots), rub it through and then shake it out over the tub and brush out the excess. What a difference! It looks like I just washed it. And now my hair is already growing in a lot healthier. Skip the expensive products - they are just perfumed baking soda anyway.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

Kali- ACTUALLY, its not good for your hair to wash it every day. Go to any hair stylist (that knows what they are doing), and they will tell you the less you wash your hair, the better. Of course, look and smell wise, its probably not a good idea to go for too long. And its very possible to take a shower and not wash your hair people! Its called using a hair net or wrapping a towel around your hair. Not washing your hair has absolutely nothing to do with laziness- I get compliments all the time at how "healthy" and "beautiful" my hair is, and I am absolutely convinced that at least part of the reason is I don't wash it every day, and very often I will go a few days and use a dry shampoo. In fact, I believe that my hair looks much better on the days I do not wash it as I have very thick hair that can be a little poofy when its too squeaky clean. I do admit though, the type of hair you have definitely plays a role. Thin/flat/lifeless hair generally looks better freshly washed. And I DO take showers every day, thank you very much.

Can you wash your hair -- without washing it?

I just ordered some hair powder from Lulu organics.
